Feuding managers and strikers at Radio France began talks (Attn: Omaha Steve!)

For the past 23 days, France’s main radio service has been crippled by a strike over proposed cost-cutting plans, the longest in its history. All the while, Radio France stations have been broadcasting round-the-clock music instead of their usual programmes.

Last month, as France held nationwide elections and a Germanwings passenger plane crashed into the French Alps, all listeners got were brief news bulletins and apologies for the disruption. Those journalists who turned up to record their programmes were unable to do so without technical and production staff, who form the bulk of the strikers.

By most accounts the playlists have been pleasantly good, albeit somewhat repetitive. But with the strike now in its fourth week, tempers are fraying at the Maison de la radio, the iconic circular building located on the banks of the River Seine.

France’s Socialist government has slammed an “intolerable” situation and urged unions and managers to “resume dialogue at once”, aided by a mediator. But as one veteran producer put it on Friday, “the problem is we never had a dialogue with this management”.

Mostly US pop-rock. Regular Radio France programs haven't been available via internet though a few still are: http://www.radiofrance.fr/

News broadcasts are still available 24/7 on RFI however: http://www.rfi.fr/

I think RFI is produced by the same organization. Radio France seems more sympathetic toward Hollande and the PS generally and it has a lot of cultural programming so I prefer listening to France Culture when it's available but news is news I guess and RFI is great for that.

Not in Europe at the moment, but hope to be heading there in June or July . . .

I'm here permanently, so thankfully don't have TV access to the US MSM.

Somewhere I have a picture of myself standing in front of la Maison de la Radio with a Barack Obama poster and an "Avenue du Pdt Kennedy" street sign all in the same frame which wasn't easy LOL . . . unfortunately it was at night and the flash was lousy so it's not a great shot but if I find it I'll put it up. Good times!
