Hillary Clinton, Just an Unrecognized Burrito Bowl Fan

Hillary Rodham Clinton’s presidential campaign is all about “everyday Americans,” she made clear in announcing it on Sunday.

On Monday, she showed how unassuming she herself could be.

Driving to Iowa for her first campaign swing, Mrs. Clinton’s van — with two aides and Secret Service agents aboard — pulled into a Chipotle restaurant for lunch in Maumee, Ohio, a suburb of Toledo.

And no one recognized her.

between Hillary and her unassuming Chipotle trip, and Paul Ryan bogarting his way into a soup kitchen and washing clean pans. I don't think this trip-wire condemnation and blocking is appropriate. You may want to re-think your behavior and apologize.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/post-politics/wp/2012/10/15/charity-president-unhappy-about-paul-ryan-soup-kitchen-photo-op/

The head of a northeast Ohio charity says that the Romney campaign last week “ramrodded their way” into the group’s Youngstown soup kitchen so that GOP vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan could get his picture taken washing dishes in the dining hall.

Brian J. Antal, president of the Mahoning County St. Vincent De Paul Society, said that he was not contacted by the Romney campaign ahead of the Saturday morning visit by Ryan, who stopped by the soup kitchen after a town hall at Youngstown State University.

“We’re a faith-based organization; we are apolitical because the majority of our funding is from private donations,” Antal said in a phone interview Monday afternoon. “It’s strictly in our bylaws not to do it. They showed up there, and they did not have permission. They got one of the volunteers to open up the doors.”

He added: “The photo-op they did wasn't even accurate. He did nothing. He just came in here to get his picture taken at the dining hall.”

If Hillary's campaign had planned this, it couldn't have gone better: No obvious photo-op, just get in, take a bite, get out. Nothing artificial like doing dishes in front of the camera. Something authentic.

Who a politician represents is not that big a factor in determining who common folk are going to recognize on the street.

I think Hillary's anonymous Chipotle's run reflects the idea that regular American workers are far too busy trying to make ends meet and/or are way too inundated by iPhones and Kardashians to take notice of the "boring" grind of politics.

used to watching out for famous people. I always had to because I worked in entertainment in Los Angeles. And depending on where you were, you might see some Oscar winner at the grocery store or heading into the dry cleaners' or some such unspectacular location. My daughter and I ran into Julia Roberts standing in line at a local Starbucks one Sunday morning. If you weren't used to scanning for celebrities, you wouldn't have recognized her. And she was unspectacular-looking, too. She was in her jammies with her hair kind of disheveled - which is pretty much how everybody else looked, standing in line at the local Starbucks on a Sunday morning.

If you don't expect it, then you won't expect it.

so I'm sure I see politicians all the time but I don't necessarily notice it. I went the anti-police brutality march here in DC this past year and Al Sharpton walked right past. Didn't even notice but I'm weird that way.

I remember going to a big arena concert for I-forget-what and I spotted Bob Dylan in the audience. It always helped when I was still working - I could spot the celeb and go get a quote or comment or react for a "people item" or some such thing before others in the press gaggle did. NOW, forget it. I'd be lost. I can't keep track of 'em anymore!

If I were still working, I'd probably have to know each and every "Real Housewife" and "Bachelor/Bachelorette" and "American Idol" figure and all the "True Blood" stuff and "Hunger Games" stuff and - SHEESH - who could keep up?

I use to work downtown about five years ago and at lunch use to walk there. Many celebs I didn't recognize a few I did.

Same for LAX.

and once again, it's all about her, not us.

I don't follow tabloids, but if someone whose image I saw daily walked in, I think I'd notice, if only to spot an anomaly. So no, i wouldn't recognize a Kardashian, but I'd notice one.

The tip off makes it clear that this is a PR move. It also makes it clear that this is an unusual event. She isn't an everyday American. She is a super rich person that doesn't order her own food or carry her own tray, and when she does her staff thinks it's news. What's her next PR stunt that the press will be tipped off about? "Check the traffic camera on I80 at 12:30. Hillary will be driving a car! Isn't that weird?! She is an everyday person!"

Hillary and Bill are the most accessible WH couple according to the SS. Anyone who lives in Chappaqua knows this. They do the things that anyone living in a community would do. They take regular walks with their dogs, they go to Starbucks, the local restaurants and other shops. Anyone can approach them. Heck, I have a friend who lives a few blocks away from them and has a pic of Hillary, who was then the SOS, and Chelsea at a lingerie store. Hillary was shopping for bras. Another time this friend saw her at the local drug store buying hair clips and scrunchies for her hair.

I don't know why some of you think that just because the Clintons have made a substantial amount of money after leaving the WH that they have ceased to act like normal human beings.

It's what happens when people want to sit on their good intentions and expect an "alternative candidate" to leap up and dance to please them, without anything more than "keyboard support" that consists of trashing anyone who isn't their favorite. HRC has gotten way too much of that on this so-called Democratic board.

When that Magical Candidate doesn't do what they want, despite typing pleas over and over again, and other candidates who have support, like Clinton and Webb, move forward, they're left feeling resentful.

Sour grapes--it's what's for dinner!

I also have no problem with anyone preferring another candidate, but I do have a problem with the endless posts about inane and petty stuff like this one. I don't mean the OP, but the responses from the by now usual crowd.

I expect better from a Democratic site. I guess I'm wrong and the internet reduces everything to the lowest common denominator.

I was in a restaurant in Munich. It was an old restored building with many rooms, so it wasn't obvious who was there in any of the other rooms. I was upset as all hell when I found out that Gorbachev had been eating dinner with some people about three rooms down. They probably wouldn't have appreciated me barging in to say hi (assuming I even would have gotten that far--I don't know who else was with him), but I sure as hell would have tried.
