And who in America is more "comfortable" than those who supply arms to the military - i. e., the ones who would benefit from increased military spending?
Hint: It ain't me, and I suspect it ain't you either.

(9,126 posts)Perfectly put. If everyone in this country had to answer that question in the voting booth, we wouldn't see a Republican elected. There is so much truth in it.

(12,151 posts)That's really all of this appears to come down to. Money for the public good -- SS, Medicare, infrastructure spending, PUBLIC education, PUBLIC transportation, all fails to give legislators sufficient pork to dole out to campaign contributors.
We don't spend money on things we NEED. We spend money on things that elected politicians can trade for money and favors.

(49 posts)in 2008 the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics has calculated that more than 151 members of Congress have up to $195 million invested in major defense contractors. That's just wrong.

(1,560 posts)If you want to drastically cut our MIC budget, as i do, then we need to elect solid progressives to congress that are willing to do just that. Sadly, too many people ignore the importance of legislative elections to affect that change. Until we get folks on our side voting in as large numbers during midterm years as they do in Presidential years, we're not going to be able to get much done. Presidential elections are massively important, but let's not get so sidetracked as to ignore or downplay congressional elections.

(23,953 posts)Republicans elected --> Big $$$$ for defense contractors --> defense contractors shower GOP candidates with campaign $$ --> Republicans elected
This cycle can be further enhanced by starting various wars, which helps to explain the republican approach to international diplomacy.
