VW Bus to be re-released as an electric vehicle

https://www.minds.com/blog/view/434842644913328128/vw-bus-to-be-re-released-as-an-electric-vehicle

The Volkswagen Westfalia Camper ceased production in 2003, but board member Dr Heinz-Jakob Neusser revealed that the bus will be coming back as an electric vehicle.

Though images of the new vehicle have yet to be released, Neusser explained that the Camper will have a small electric motor to power the front wheels; the batter packs will be under the floor. He added that it will feature three key design cues, reminicent of the VW Bus, “first the wide, solid, D-Pillar, second the boxy design of the center section and, thirdly, the front end must have a very short overhang. The distance from the A-pillar to the front end must be very short.”

The original vehicle looking something like this

The seats had straw, and there was no mistake you were in a VW. They should make it look real close to the old ones if they want to sell a lot of them. The others they recently built look like any other car on the road.

VW buses were THE transport of the late 60's and early 70's.

I had 2 Beetles and one van. And always sold them for what I had paid!

My Dad (who had driven just about EVERYthing in WW2) had to pull out the manual to figure out how to put the damn thing in reverse when we first got it back in late 50's.

Any time we saw another one on the road we honked and waved and carried on like crazy.

Shifting gears took a great deal of practice, and the engine was underpowered so it stalled easily if you let the clutch out too fast.

Getting the van rolling again from a stop while facing uphill took some real talent. I drove it in San Francisco a few times.

The whole town was on the side of one big hill. With the #82 bus to the GW Bridge behind me at the light, I sweated bullets balancing the gas & the clutch on Fort Lee Rd.

That said, I am still pretty damn good with a standard transmission, some 50 years down the road.

It needs a 20kWh or larger battery pack and DC charging, otherwise going places will take a very long time if it's battery only.

An 80kWh pack should get it 300 miles with 30 minute recharge w fast DC, a la Tesla Superstations.

Well, we shot the line
We went for broke
With a thousand screamin' trucks
And eleven long haired Friends of Jesus
In a Chartreuse microbus

Yeah, Rubber Duck 'tis Sod Buster
C'mon there
Yeah, Ten-Four Sod Buster
Listen, you wanna put that microbus
In behind that suicide jockey
Yeah, he's haulin' dynamite
And he needs all the help he can get
