I really haven't paid much attention to TPP but know that it is being criticized by many and President Obama is taking hits on it as well. I'm having a problem believing that President Obama would support something that can be damaging to this country and its workers. So I ask the question - how is he justifying his support for this?

Representative Alan Grayson can explain it better than I can.

(13,685 posts)It's good for business.
And it's good for India and China since they are emerging countries with populations that need jobs so they can buy electricity and cars and furniture which will grow the businesses of making electricity and cars and furniture.
The worst thing about this is that if an Indian business can't grow because of a regulation in the US, that Indian business can sue to have that US regulation eliminated.

(25,247 posts)certainly he must have been asked and be on the record with his answer. Again - I read that this is a National Disaster and bad for this country and the workers. Again - as I said in my original post - I just can't see President Obama supporting something like this that is a so-called National Disaster. He must have some reason why he supports it. What is he saying? Do you have any quotes from him?
I want to see this first before I start calling the White House and my Congressional Representatives.

(10,998 posts)his walking shoes for the global corporations, not the working people of America.
I called my two progressive Senators and Representative and none of them would say where they stand on the TPP issue. One Senator is against FastTrack.
I heard on Thom Hartmann that every one constituent phone call is equivalent to calls from 4,000 constituents.
So we must call to voice our opposition and to ask our legislators where they stand. We must call the WH to voice our opposition to this disaster and express why it is a disaster.
I'm as annoyed as you but I'm letting them know that I (and 4,000 more constituents) are against it.

(10,998 posts)I have either found support for it or against it. Lies the WH has put out in the public about the environmental degradation it won't cause, the jobs it won't lose, the sovereignty it won't forfeit, the trade deficit it won't add to, the labor laws it won't nullify.
I have found lists of corporations in on the secret negotiations with the WH.
Either he supports it because he believes in it, or was paid via campaign donations to support it or is blackmailed to support it. I don't know which one is the truth.
But I still call my legislators because I don't support it. It was written in secret, it is to be kept a secret from congress to speed through its passage and these actions are wrong. TPP is NAFTA on steroids. TPP is a global corporate coup d'états.
Sorry, global1, I couldn't answer your question, I wish I had a legitimate answer too.

(25,247 posts)this country? Do you think that after all the hard work he's done in his last 6 years to bring the economy back from the brink that he wants to do something that some people are calling a "National Disaster" and undo that work?
If this is as bad as some people are saying what kind of impact would that have on his legacy? I don't think he wants to go down in history as the President that brought down a "National Disaster" on this country. Do you?
I have to think that he knows something that we don't about this and it's not going to wreck havoc on this country's economy and the working class people.
I have to believe that a lot of what people are getting off the internet is conjecture, rumors, half truths, etc.
Maybe he's got the Repugs connived that they think this is supporting their beliefs and he is just using them to get this passed. Maybe if they knew what was really in this agreement that they wouldn't support it and that in turn would do damage to this country. Maybe this is a way a lame duck President can use the system to maintain some power and influence.
I have got to place my trust in this man - President Obama - that's why I've voted for him twice and so far he's done pretty well by me.
Until I hear from him as to why he's supporting this - I'm not going to call Congress and the WH and get it quashed.
Do you remember his speech right after this Iran Nuclear Agreement was made public. He went through it in detail why he supports it and why we should support it. He made a believer out of me as to why this Iranian agreement was good for us and the world and that is what I'm expecting to hear from him about this deal as well.

People should be able to sue politicians for fraud. Because saying one thing to get elected and doing the opposite is fraud.
Edit: There are lots of videos from Campaign 2007/8 where Obama said NAFTA was a mistake. Especially the 2007 AFL - CIO debate with Keith Olbermann
