We live in a very non-diverse area of the far northwest Chicago suburbs. I call it embarrassingly Caucasian. A lone family of color moved in to the neighborhood shortly after we did, and they had 2 little girls the same age as our sons - 2 and 4. As young children often do, they became buddies immediately. On one occasion, when we were outside in their yard, our older son asked the older sister a question to which she did not know the answer. The 8 yr old boy who lived next door to this family was out in his front yard, just a few feet away. My son said, "I'll go ask her brother. I'll bet he knows"

The neighbor was a blond and blue-eyed as could be. I was struck by my son's 4 yr old innocence, as he obviously had no idea that the blue-eyed blond was likely not the brother of his dark-eyed, dark-skinned friend.
