IRS files $70K tax lien against Harris-Perry, husband

The Internal Revenue Service has placed a tax lien on Melissa Harris-Perry and her husband, James Perry, for about $70,000 in delinquent taxes, according to a notice filed in Forsyth County Hall of Justice earlier this month.

Harris-Perry is a well-known host of an MSNBC talk show and a professor at Wake Forest University. The IRS filed the notice April 6.

In an email Wednesday, Harris-Perry said she was unaware of the tax lien but knew about the debt. She said she and her husband paid $21,721 of the debt when they filed their taxes Wednesday. The remaining debt, $48,581, covers a tax period ending Dec. 31, 2013, according to the notice.

Harris-Perry said she and her husband had been working to pay off the debt but had to deal with a series of personal crises that caused the couple to pay off the debt a lot slower than expected.

At least a few of the comments got the clue that this is an overblown hit piece.

PAYMENT PLAN REACHED to all you right wing assholes out there. In April 2015, the Winston-Salem Journal reported that the IRS had placed a tax lien on Harris-Perry and her husband for about $70,000 in delinquent taxes. Harris-Perry said she and her husband paid $21,721 on April 15, 2015 and have a payment plan with the IRS.[18]
(much of this is quoted from Wikipedia)

What part of she had a payment plan, had been paying on it, and just paid 21k of the debt Wednesday did nobody hear? What ever happened to "wait until we know the facts?" You have no idea why she had a 70k tax bill to even pay off. You realize that that could be any number of reasons, right? She hasn't done anything illegal, that I can see, since she had a payment plan and was paying.

Best wishes for working their way out of their financial woes in a way that is bearable for them and fair to their creditors.

As long as they keep talking to the IRS and make/keep arrangements, the lien is mostly procedural (though it can mess up credit a little and of course, it makes selling the property with the lien a hassle). Once the debt is paid, the lien is removed.

Smells like selective enforcement to me. It's a good thing the NSA has meta-data on all of us - cuz we might get out of line and have to have our behavior corrected to suit acceptable government norms.

Truly Orwellian and I have long had the opinion the IRS, once they set their sites on you, can behave something like an American Gestapo.

Just where the hell is the country I was taught in public schools was so fucking great? Liberty and justice for all and all that.

Fortunately, they also made me read Animal Farm and 1984 in school, too. So I have a clue and it's up to my obligations of citizenship to do something to correct the course of our democratic republic. Which consists of posting on DU and occasionally summoning the mettle to facebook info on "current events", like the MSM completely blacked out TPP progress. If it looks like fascism and quacks like fascism....
