Bernie Sanders Urges Hillary Clinton To Join The Fight And Defeat The TPP

Bernie Sanders Urges Hillary Clinton To Join The Fight And Defeat The TPP
By: Jason Easley
Friday, April, 17th, 2015, 10:34 pm

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) sent a strong message to Hillary Clinton that she should stand with Democrats and liberals against the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

In a statement, Sanders said:

For decades, corporate America has been pushing disastrous trade agreements on the American people. The result: millions of jobs lost through outsourcing, lower wages and the collapse of our middle class.

My strong hope is that Secretary Clinton and all candidates, Republicans and Democrats, will make it clear that the Trans-Pacific Partnership should be rejected and that we must develop trade policies that benefit working families, not just Wall Street and multi-national corporations.

Democrats and liberals have good reason to skeptical of the TPP. The business community has praised the deal, and multinational corporations are pushing hard for the agreement. Congressional Republicans, who are by nature unfriendly to the concerns of workers, are pushing to give President Obama fast track authority.

Hillary Clinton’s support or opposition to the agreement will define her candidacy in many respects for Democratic voters, which is the reason the Clinton campaign is voicing skepticism about trade deals in general.

2. Clinton made a reasoned response today.

Apr 2015

In a statement Friday, Clinton's Democratic presidential campaign said she believes that any new trade measure should "protect American workers, raise wages and create more good jobs at home." The agreement should also "strengthen our national security," the campaign said.

Clinton thinks the U.S. should reject any final deal that does not satisfy those criteria, the statement said. "The goal is greater prosperity and security for American families, not trade for trade's sake," according to the campaign.

More specifically, the statement said, she will be "watching closely to see what is being done to crack down on currency manipulation, improve labor rights, protect the environment and health, promote transparency and open new opportunities for our small businesses to export overseas."

If it does not when it's released and analyzed, she'll have to speak against it.

She shoveled a pile of rhetoric. Funny how no one that doesn't oppose the TPP will not commit themselves. "I want to wait to see just how bad it screws our workers before I decide." No one that supports the TPP will explain how it will help the American lower classes.

seems like you all don't want to discuss any of these issues. You just want to make jokes and put downs. There are real, substantive matters to discuss here. Too bad you don't care enough to bother. And you wonder why government doesn't do what you want? You can't even be bothered to make an argument.

because she had a role in negotiating it, at least while she was Secretary of State.

The investor provisions uncovered by Wikileaks seem a lot like Chapter 11 of Nafta, which is very troubling.

Yep, that's where I will be sending my money as soon as he announces. I've already set aside what is considered a huge chunk of cash ready for Bernie!

Hillary can get hers from the 1%, but Bernie will get it from the 99% - in other words, Bernie's 99% beats Hillary's 1% every time.

And I trust him on all issues that concerns me the most.

I wish all the candidates were as straightforward as you are.

We should not enter more trade agreements until we have a close to positive or positive trade balance with the agreements we have.

There is no way that the people of a nation that pays 59 cents per hour in wages to workers can afford to buy our products. And there is no way that the citizens of very nationalistic countries will choose to buy our products.

We need one-to-on trade deals that exist because the people of the other country want to buy from us, not just sell to us. This trade deal will most likely not do that. How are countries in which people are living at a subsistence level going to buy our products? It is not going to happen. They cannot afford to buy our products.

These trade agreements are the equivalent of foreign aid. The idea that the people in impoverished or very nationalistic countries will buy from us because we sign an agreement with the leaders of their country that says they will is naive.

We should just give money to other countries, not pretend we are trading with them.

Bernie (from OP):

. . . the Trans-Pacific Partnership should be rejected and that we must develop trade policies that benefit working families, not just Wall Street and multi-national corporations.

TPP:

The Obama Administration is pursuing TPP to unlock opportunities for American manufacturers, workers, service providers, farmers, and ranchers – to support job creation and wage growth. We are working hard to ensure that TPP will be a comprehensive deal, providing new and meaningful market access for goods and services; strong and enforceable labor standards and environmental commitments . . .

Well at least he's read the first page anyway . . .
