Pretty low, I suspect, although this particular police officer seems very courageous and willing to endure some increased personal risk to himself to decrease the chance of him having to kill the other man, in contrast to what we've seen from most of these other recent stories of killings by police.

From NBCnews.com (video is at the link):
The suspect rushes toward him shouting, "Shoot me, shoot me!"
"Back up!" screams Kidder, holding his gun out. The man finally crumples to the ground just feet away from the officer in the video taken in the Cincinnati suburb of Elsmere, Kentucky.
Investigators say Michael Wilcox, 27, killed his fiancee in their Brown County, Ohio, home, then killed his best friend in Elsmere, reported NBC affiliate WLWT in Cincinnati, which first obtained the body-camera video. A Brown County investigator spotted Wilcox Thursday night at about 8 p.m. and attempted to stop him, but Wilcox claimed he had a gun and drove away, officials said.

The suspect in the confrontation with Officer Jesse Kidder surrendered peacefully with no shots fired.
In the Kentucky case, the suspect was believed to be armed and is heard threatening the officer on the video.
...
"I was trying to open a dialogue with him. 'I don't want to shoot you, get on the ground,' but he wasn't having it. He kept repeating, 'Shoot me.' At one point, he said 'Shoot me or I'll shoot you,'" Kidder told WLWT.

(13,877 posts)heavily-baited, racist title. He purchased his own helmet camera so he could record any incident that might be debatable. Why would he not, especially, record an incident with a black male. And how do we know he hasn't...this one just made the news.
BTW, the kid looked mixed race, at least, to me but it was a ways a way. I'll be the first to criticize what we've seen lately, but this guy was a hero. This likely mentally retarded kid is still breathing and hopefully will get the help he needs.
I believe this is the first case #1 a recording was made of a non-killing and #2 an officer who is willing to be accountable and pay for a helmet cam.
He deserves our praise.

(1,053 posts)I mean, ffs, he's wearing a body cam, didn't shoot someone (I think he
took far more risk than he should have, btw) and people still find reason
to complain...hypothetical reasons too. If we're going to do hypothetical,
this could have very easily been a dead cop with a suspect either dead in
a hail of gunfire (when backup came) or free to harm citizens of the
neighborhood...because the cop didn't just put himself at personal risk,
he put the community at risk as well. Hindsight and hypothetiicals are
meaningless when things are happening, and frankly, he just got lucky.
So instead of intelligently talking about these considerations, or at least
having a substantive discussion about the intersection of race relations
and police power, we just seem to have people who seem perplexingly
disappointed that this wasn't another "police officer shoots black man"
story. Apparently, the race/sex/identity of the cop doesn't seem
to matter, since people seem to tell me that all "pigs are cut from the same
cloth no matter who they are"...evidently it's the same cloth Star Wars storm
troopers are cut from, the way I hear it.
Forgive me for being annoyed, I'm just starting to get tired of the
pervasive stereotyping. It would make a bigot blush.
