don't take sea lions home - they don't make good pets

Sea lion pup taken from Dockweiler Beach parking lot, witness says

----- the cops are looking for a group that may have taken a sea lion pup home.

Wallerstein said sea lions often wander onto land looking for food, and people have tried to take them in before. He said most people have good intentions but make bad decisions.

"They'll put them in their bathtubs, then call us to rescue them," Wallerstein said.

But there have been some aspiring pet owners among the good Samaritans, said Wallerstein, who has been rescuing marine mammals for 30 years. One caller kept a sea lion in their backyard for three days before calling Wallerstein and giving it up.

"It wasn't eating, so they thought they'd better call someone," Wallerstein said.

Sea lions do not make good pets, Wallerstein said. They bite with 10 times the strength of dogs, and their mouths are dirtier and more bacteria-ridden than any other mammal, Wallerstein said. Keeping a sea lion carries a penalty of up to a year in prison and fine of up to $10,000, Wallerstein said.

for a movie a while back. Worked out well for her. She made friends with others & they're all living on a cool island. There's a movie about them coming out soon - can't wait to see how they're all doing.

the local operators made a hero out of a little girl who purportedly wrote a letter to the editor seeking support and funding for the zoo. In the aftermath an initiative was launched and passed called A to Z (Arts to Zoo) as a sales tax, I believe, perhaps a tenth of a percent. In the aftermath of that initiative's success a lawsuit or similar objections killed it due to some lack of clarity as to funds disbursement, iirc. In the aftermath of that decision, Measure Z was launched, with what I consider suspicious support from local conservatives at various levels. In the wake of yet another Measure Z passage, the largest, oldest downtown park, Roeding Park, a gift from the Roeding family with specific requirements for protecting the trees and precious greenspace in urbanic west Fresno has been remodeled, with lavish elaborations upon the Chaffee Zoo. The kind you make with cement.
Sea Lion Cove, "Stingray" Bay, and hopefully much more comfortable quarters for previous cramped mammals like Elephants, Hippos, Orangutans, Big Cats, etc etc.

But what the result appears to be is a brutally inconsiderate encroachment upon a severely rare resource, with considerable local use, disregarded in favor of upscale zoo visitors and now a FIVE DOLLAR entrance fee to the Park itself.
A park with ONLY ONE available shelter in rain.
A park that offers a mirror reflection of the nice facilities at Woodward Park uptown.
The sort of critters that love a seament pond are fairly fond of local politicians, too.

I'll take in a critter that can weigh over a ton and eats 40 lbs. of fish and squid in one sitting.

I *would* pet a baby, though .

Five years (and eight feet later) it chased my nine year old daughter up a flight of stairs when it was hungry. Fortunately it couldn't operate a door knob. Once I became pregnant with my third child it was off to the local zoo with the snake.
