The "humor" here is in the right-wing article of faith that the tort system is broken, and that individuals claiming to have been injured by workplace accidents or medical malpractice or whatever are making huge windfall gains.

Dan Quayle believes that. Anyone familiar with the system knows it's baloney.

My familiarity with the system comes because I represent those injured victims. I have a brief due tomorrow on behalf of a client who suffered permanent disability, in part because a big corporation (Delta Airlines) wouldn't spend a little extra money to make its workplace safe. It exposed him to an unnecessary hazard and his foot got crushed. That was in 2011 and he still hasn't seen a dime (and any eventual award will NOT bear interest from the date of accident, although if Delta had an unrelated contract claim against a supplier, any award in that case WOULD bear interest from the date of contract breach).

Trust me, the odds are better on Lotto, ripoff though it be.
