I realize he was a fundamentalist Christian and I wasn't a real fan, but not sure how you can blame religion on this. Heaven knows we have many many millions who likewise fail treatment/rehabilitation and quite a few of them are likely non-religious or atheist.

...simply because I don't know all the facts regarding whatever treatment he did or didn't seek. However, what I will say is that it is very common from within organized religion to try to treat these types of things when they have no business doing so. More than a few people have died, and more than a few lives have been destroyed from people who thought it was a good idea to seek treatment from a religious organization instead of a competent medical professional. L. Ron Hubbard couldn't legally practice his dianetics quackery until he developed the religion of Scientology to 'legitimize' it. The Christian church is no better and worse in many respects.
