I don't have an idea about what would make me angry enough to get out in the public.
I think that's my point. Most people would choose to continue their lives, rather than go to extraordinary lengths to challenge government. I think that's true in Baltimore, Ferguson, and any other American city. To get people, most of whom don't vote, out in the street takes an egregious act that causes a person to leave their comfort zone.
I won't criticize those in the streets. It probably took a lot to motivate them. I don't know what would make me take action, but there must be some breaking point at which I would march, too. But I think that before we criticize the marchers, we examine our lives and consider what would make us take civil action.

(1,040 posts)I have a great sense of injustice, but maybe I'm all talk, because I've never been able to step outside my comfort zone. I think that's what makes me admire people like you and those in Baltimore and Ferguson.

(52,589 posts)the ballot has been taken away for a number of us. It's the only thing we have left and I have only one life to live to try and make things better.

(45,251 posts)letting stand the decision of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court on equal marriage.
Luckily, both the left and the right protested that one, so the state legislators pretended to be unable to decide what to do next. Voila! Equal marriage in Massachusetts, the first state in the nation. All the blame fell on the Justices, who serve for life and therefore need not worry about re-election, even though they had given the legislature ample time to do something about their decision. Perfect!
Not the only thing I've marched (or stood) for, but that was a beaut.
Striking or showing solidarity with strikers.
No war.
Almost any good cause of "heft."
I don't see any shame in it at all.

(359 posts)It would take a great deal to make me protest. I But I do not think I would protest by walking down the street. Cop kills a member of my family, I would take my protest to the cop.

(12,041 posts)Any sort of injustice should bring people out into the streets, there are protests happening all the time in this country and if more people were to participate then maybe things would change. Don't wait for that cataclysmic event, take to the streets now.
