Religious Americans Support Gay Marriage

Religious Americans Support Gay Marriage

Most of the recent growth in public support for same-sex unions has come from within denominations that once opposed them.

ROBERT P. JONES 10:08 AM ET

A number of major religious groups have joined the unaffiliated in supporting same-sex marriage. In addition to the more than three-quarters of the religiously unaffiliated who support same-sex marriage, 84 percent of Buddhists, 77 percent of Jews, approximately six in ten white mainline Protestants (62 percent), white Catholics (61 percent) and Hispanic Catholics (60 percent), and 56 percent of Eastern Orthodox Christians now support allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry legally.

I worked on this brief (as one of the amici organizations):

BRIEF FOR AMICI CURIAE PRESIDENT OF THE HOUSE OF DEPUTIES OF THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH AND THE EPISCOPAL BISHOPS OF KENTUCKY, MICHIGAN, OHIO, AND TENNESSEE; GENERAL SYNOD OF THE UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST; JEWISH THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY; RECONSTRUCTIONIST RABBINICAL ASSOCIATION; RECONSTRUCTIONIST RABBINICAL COLLEGE AND JEWISH RECONSTRUCTIONIST COMMUNITIES; UNION FOR REFORM JUDAISM; UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST ASSOCIATION; UNITED SYNAGOGUE OF CONSERVATIVE JUDAISM; AFFIRMATION; COVENANT NETWORK OF PRESBYTERIANS; FRIENDS FOR LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL, TRANSGENDER, AND QUEER CONCERNS; METHODIST FEDERATION FOR SOCIAL ACTION; MORE LIGHT PRESBYTERIANS; MUSLIMS FOR PROGRESSIVE VALUES; THE OPEN AND AFFIRMING COALITION OF THE UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST; PARITY; RECONCILING MINISTRIES NETWORK; RECONCILING WORKS: LUTHERANS FOR FULL PARTICIPATION; RELIGIOUS INSTITUTE, INC.; AND 1,900 INDIVIDUAL FAITH LEADERS

It is around our 15th such brief, starting with Windsor. And, as an added surprise bonus, I'm actually named in the brief! (Since my name is all over the reference they cited, I knew it was a possibility. But the generally limited naming names to those in the cases. But by the time the reference was in their hands, there wasn't time to check back with me about how they used it.) Surprise!

to their hate.

I hope the supremes do the right thing and take the feds out of Americans bedroom's.

All of the huge problems we face in this country and we have to waste time, energy and money fighting a tiny loud minority on this issue.

Ridiculous.
