Your hired guns did it for you, dude. Who hires scum like that and only fires them when they look bad? Who gave them the idea they could do things like that to 'help' you?

Even though Henry did not order the execution of Becket he was held accountable for his death. Henry did not suffer grave punishment but he was forced to give up his drive to have control over the church.
