Why would your answer depend on other peoples ages? You can't answer what you believe without knowing their age? What?

who were alive when FDR was President. He was a giant. I like Truman, too. There may be people here who favor JFK, or Carter. Surely we have people responding to this poll who were born after those Presidencies. Their lifetimes may be briefer than mine, or others' lifetimes. That makes a difference.

I think there are things Obama may yet accomplish. I was disappointed by the bipartisanship crap of his first term. I admire the way he is being tougher now.

Also, it takes time to judge. There may be some long-term positive effects of Obama's Presidency that we cannot yet see.

Of course, I voted for him twice. I would not be here otherwise.

Tue May 5, 2015, 08:50 AM

years before a lot of us were born. I happened to have been born in the time period where we have only had 3 Democratic Presidents in my lifetime, Carter, Clinton, and now Obama. It has all been Republicans other than only those three. I was kind of young when Carter was president, so I have a hard time there.

That leaves me with Clinton and Obama. Despite some of Clinton's policies that I thought leaned too far right later on in his presidency (I despised Workfare, NAFTA, and some of his other later policies), I did overall like him as president at that time. The times were different back then though. Instead of WHEN are gay people going to get some basic rights, it was ARE gay people ever going to even have a seat at the table to try to get rights.

I do also feel that Obama has furthered some of the things that Clinton started. Believe it or not, one of the things people beat Clinton over the head with is DADT. Before that, there was no move by any major politician to change the policy the military had before that, which was if they found out you were gay, you were screwed with no recourse legally. They could just give you a dishonorable discharge if they merely found out you were gay. It was much worse before DADT. As bad as DADT was, it did open the door to make change later, which is why I thought Clinton did that; to open the door to something better later. Also, other issues Clinton was good on, Obama was able to advance further too. So, I have appreciated those. I can't choose between them though as which one is "best" in my lifetime, because they really are very similar in their policies and how they have/had govern(ed). Both seem to have worked together to make some good changes and both have some policies I don't like too much.

I guess you just have to remember what it was like before to know how to compare now. Some people on DU were alive while Kennedy was president. You can bet if they were, most likely they loved him and he will be their favorite.

So, the answer could possibly depend on the age of the person responding to your poll and personal experiences they may have noticed in regards to a particular president through the years.

saw Bush II's administration wreck the country as a teenager, and Clinton when I was a kid. His agenda out of those 3 has pretty much been the best in my lifetime hands-down. Clinton had more cross-over appeal to the rural and conservative crowd, but O's agenda was a little more progressive, as he seemed to pay more attention to social issues that no other incumbent acknowledged before.

If you’re one of those folks who thinks President Obama is a “disappointment,” you haven’t been paying attention the last few years. And those of you who try to draw comparisons with the Bush Administration should put away the hallucinogens and have your memory checked. If you were in a coma for the eight Bush Years, I apologize and forgive you. But please join the real world. So far, this president has done most of what he said he would do if elected; imagine what he could have done by now if progressives had supported him and not given him a Congress that doesn’t look at him as if he’s the demon seed.
Not only is Obama NOT a “disappointment,” he’s pretty much the opposite.

Not only is he NOT a “disappointment,” he’s pretty much the opposite. And no, I don’t just say that because he took out Osama bin Laden, helped Libya determine their own destiny for the first time in a while, and because he seems able to handle international incidents without starting a new war. The guy does nearly everything we elect a president to do, and he doesn’t brag about it constantly.

Is he perfect? No, he’s human. Does he deserve some criticism? I suppose, but I must admit I haven’t seen any complaints that were of based on anything having to do with the real world. One I can’t forgive him for is pulling Janet Napolitano out of Arizona. But the thing is, on balance, he’s mostly stellar. Besides, criticism about certain specific problems is one thing; taking on an overall “Obama sucks” meme not only has the potential to put Willard Romney into power, it’s also a lie. Just because you wanted a president who would give you a glitter-farting unicorn and didn’t quite get that doesn’t mean he’s not doing well at the job we hired him for.

What follows is a PARTIAL list of Obama’s accomplishments so far. Unlike many such lists, there is a link to a citation supporting every single one.

Insincere, massively publicized speeches about reining in military power, followed immediately by huge escalations in military power, a new war in Syria, a new war in Iraq, carpet bombing of captive populations in Gaza, a continuation of the unconscionable droning of civilians in multiple countries with which we are not at war, and a new TRILLION DOLLAR ramp-up of nuclear weapons...That's not acceptable.

Lying, manipulative claims to care about the environment, while selling off expanses of the Gulf of Mexico for drilling, opening the Atlantic Coast for drilling, relentless support for fracking, and defense of the most environmentally predatory "free trade" agreements in this nation's history.....That's not acceptable.

Shameless, lying speeches extolling the government's transparency and protection of whistleblowers and respect for journalism, when we have all seen the treatment of Chelsea Manning and Edward Snowden by this administration, and when we have all witnessed the outrageous targeting of investigative journalists through abuse of the Espionage Act....That's not acceptable.

Disgusting claims to represent the interests of the 99 percent, while stuffing the cabinet with predatory corporatists, signing cuts in aid for the poor and disabled repeatedly, putting SS on the table as a "greater evil" to justify the imposition of austerity greater even that that Paul Ryan initially requested, giving nauseating speeches about the need to eat our peas while repeating Republican LIES tying SS to the defiicit, personally lobbying to gain settlements for criminal bankers, and then unconscionably lobbying for the criminal CRONYBUS to even further deregulate banks and allow the looting of America to happen again.....That's not acceptable.

hasn't always gotten it wrong either. He has overall been good. He has done some I liked and some I didn't. I would not call him a bad president, but good overall would fit my description of him a bit better than great. Then again, I haven't thought any president is great out of the ones I have had in my lifetime. Most of the presidents in my lifetime have been either Republicans or what I consider conservative or centrist Dems. Neither of those excite me very much at all. He is certainly better than a Republican most of the time. That much is for sure, but there are a few things he has conceded to the Republicans way too soon for my taste. I think he could have won a few more if he had fought them harder in his first term, but I see why he probably had to handle it the way he did. So, all in all, he has been a good president.

Of course he is a Democrat, so that's pretty much a given. I certainly give him full credit for being affable and a great speaker. I don't criticize him in many areas, but I think he should have figured out what the repiggies meant by the word compromise a lot sooner than he did.
