U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer widened the gap Wednesday in his split with the White House over a trade deal with Asian and Pacific Rim nations, stating he won't support it without a crackdown on Chinese currency manipulation.

The No. 3 Democrat in the Senate said he fears the 11-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership
trade deal favored by President Barack Obama would only continue to cost American jobs.
Schumer, speaking in a conference call with reporters, said he will encourage his fellow Democrats in the Senate to oppose TPP, along with the Trade Promotion Authority that would allow the White House to fast-track the legislation through Congress without changes.
"I oppose this emerging deal," Schumer said, adding "I believe it will hurt jobs in Upstate New York and it will put us on the defensive in trying to grow back middle-class jobs," Schumer said.
Schumer compared the TPP deal to the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) that he opposed in the 1990s, despite intense lobbying from former President Bill Clinton.

(9,086 posts)Schumer is not really fighting against TPP.
He's working to add this currency manipulation thing.
And once it gets added they will call it a compromise, say it's fixed, and whip up enough votes to pass it.
Probably we hear so much about currency manipulation because it's of especially important interest to the financial industry and the investment class.
But it's not even close to being the worse aspect of the TPP.
In my opinion this is theater, Schumer is working to protect the financial industry, while also putting on a show to give Democrats an excuse to vote for the TPP once this change is made.
