I see no difference between these cops and a street gang other than they have a lot more power.
Video at link
New York, NY A video released last week has once again caught the police in a lie. Two NYPD officers were caught assaulting a man for filming an officer who was inappropriately touching his female friend during a stop and frisk.
Jason Disisto and his friends were hanging out on a sidewalk on March 12, 2014, when Officer Jonathan Munoz walked up to Disistos female friend, grabbed her wrist, and began to put his hands inside her sweater. Concerned about what he is seeing, Disisto borrows a cellphone and attempts to begin filming the interaction. This is something that we are all well within our rights- and frankly morally obligated- to do.
Seeing that he is about to film, another officer on the scene, Edwin Flores, confronts Disisto. The situation escalates very quickly as two officers are seen assaulting the man and attempting to steal his phone. Disisto is then arrested, as the police claimed that he had lunged at the officers and attempted to punch them with a closed fist.
The blatant lies by the NYPD officers are completely disproved by three security cameras that captured the incident from multiple angles.
After the officers handcuff Disisto and put him in the back of the police vehicle, they throw the cellphone out of the window and break it. He was charged with obstructing governmental administration, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest.
Criminal charges against Disisto were ultimately dropped, yet no charges seem to have been filed for the officers who assaulted, kidnapped, and destroyed the property of an innocent man.

(3,998 posts)The problem with the discourse on this site is that those who question or want more information about what others consider a slam dunk judgment are termed apologists. The term is too loosely applied. There are many people in the community who have active working relationships with the police, and then there are those who don't. When a story breaks and there is little information, there seem to be two camps: one which states, "hmmm, this sounds pretty bad, but I'd like to reserve judgment until I know more, and then there is the other camp which immediately states, "f---ing pigs".
I think the reason why you're not hearing from apologists is because there really never were any. Just folks who wanted more info, many of whom actively work with police and bristle at such a knee jerk pejorative from those who don't need more information. Not everyone has negative intercourse with the PD, not everyone knows what has been happen on the urban streets in cities like Baltimore.
Now that a pattern is being established, mainly owing to the technology to document these horrific acts, I think many of the "apologists" have gotten more than enough information and I believe most of everyone is now in agreement.
There are people in the world, even some liberals, who are really nonjudgmental, and it takes more than coercion of those quick to judge for them to make up their minds. Patience and some depth of consideration into what their process really is will go a long way at reducing the snark in this forum.

(15,241 posts)Eventually the police states around the world will figure out that they need special powers to prevent the proles from interfering with their duties.
We've already seen some censorship by the major social networks. This could be "enhanced" by letting the state approve every posting.
We've already seen ISPs blocking traffic for various reasons. Who knows if they aren't blocking lots of other traffic since if we don't see it we don't know it was sent out.
Many repressive regimes (China, Iran, US?, RU?) already do filtering of traffic. I'll bet that if I had some earth-shattering news about the USGov taking over Walmart's basements tomorrow at 3:15AM my message would not flow freely.
Don't the police already have cell-tower intercepts? Couldn't every squad car have an access-point to capture "non-authorized" transmissions?
How hard would it be to design a signal that interfered with cell-phone cameras? Just asking, not knowing.

(359 posts)....I would have been one of the cop defenders. if a cop said something happened, then that was the gospel truth, end of story. But after so many videos came out showing the cops lied, I switched to the 'just a few bad apples" crowd. However, over time the flood of videos became a tidal wave of abusive, lying cops and I am forced to accept the fact that most cops are lying scum.
Cell phone and security camera's have shown time after time that cops will abuse you and then lie to get you thrown in prison. It is a sad day for all of society when a reasonable person would believe a random man on the street over a cop.
The only way to stop cop abuse is to sent them to prison. All three cops shown in the video should the arrested, tried and sent to prison.

(14,856 posts)is because so many people believed them for so many years. They got away with it almost 100% of the time. Now, they're having a very hard time breaking the habit.
For years, cops had the trust and respect of most of society...and they blew it. Now, I wouldn't trust a cop if he swore the sky was blue.

Mayor Bill de Blasio's rough relations with New York police appear to have changed him. He's gone from an unapologetic critic to a vocal NYPD defender.
When protesters took to the streets of New York last week, rallying against the deaths of Mr. Gray in Baltimore, Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo., and others, more than 140 were arrested. Protesters complained that the NYPD had taken a heavy-handed approach, brandishing billy clubs and throwing protesters roughly to the ground as some tried to block traffic, chanting, Freddie Gray, Michael Brown. Shut it down, shut it down.
De Blasios response?
One things clear, when the police give you an instruction, you follow the instruction. Its not debatable, de Blasio said during a testy press conference afterward. And Im saying this as someone who has been at these protests and recognize when the police say stay to the sidewalk, it means stay to the sidewalk, and that has to be respected. (193 posts)But with all of the incidents with respect to the cops versus citizens, especially unarmed ones, why do you think that more and more cops are being shot and killed ? I believe there have been at least 4 that I know of, and it's will continue to happen until indictments are handed down to special prosecutors in all the states, and incarceration is meted out after a fair trial, if convicted. The blame has to go to the FOP they are the ones that condone the actions of their union members, and threaten slow downs or sick call ins which no administrator is will to go up against.

(56,582 posts)And the danger they do face is almost entirely from motor vehicle accidents. Think about it: pretty much every time a cop gets shot it's national news. How often have you read a story about it?
malthaussen
(17,193 posts)... claiming 4 cops were shot this week (last week?). No link, of course. But I think comparing body counts (however suspect) is a false way to look at the problem.

(3,747 posts)Riffing off someone getting raped by the police, that's just fine, right?
It's cool if I made a pun about blacks getting killed by cops, right?
No problem if a cop brutally assaulted someone, and I joked around about that, right?
What about the person recently found hanging from a tree? Perfect opportunity for some tasteful humor, right?
Somehow I think people wouldn't be okay with it.
This isn't censorship anymore than banning people for being racist is. This is a community and we decide what the standards are, and it all is limited by the TOS of the site. I don't think this should be on here.
I don't think rape or molestation is a laughing matter. This type of thing should not be on a supposedly progressive site. I've watched too many people flinch when things like that are said to pretend that it's funny or acceptable.

(3,747 posts)To pretend they aren't hurtful. I don't support them, period.
What grey area do you want here? Rape isn't okay to make jokes about, but molestation is? Do you think that there are different situations that involve different levels of funniness based on severity of the assault? If so, that's quite conservative of you.
I think that joke was not only poorly timed but quite insensitive to the reality that is harassment and intimidation by a police office. It makes molestation into a laughing matter. I'm not going to apologize for asking that it be said somewhere else than this board.
