Man shot by police after he calls them because his house was broken into

He (the homeowner) had a gun, I imagine because he was worried about the person/people breaking into his house. The police showed up, saw him with a gun, and within two seconds shot him. They didn't give him time to drop the gun. He is now paralyzed from the neck down.

There's a video at the link. The police are saying something like that an untrained eye can't tell how much time there is between the police saying "show me your hands" and shooting him. The video doesn't show much - it's just the sounds - so I don't have a warning.

He says he should have put down the gun, and yes he should have, but he really wasn't given any time.

Heyward wielded the gun as he tried to defend his home and his life from a pair of intruders who had left the area before deputies Keith Tyner and Richard Powell arrived at the Hollywood home.

Powell and Tyner circled around the small Hollywood home where Heyward stepped out of a utility room on the back side of the home. Tyner shouted twice at Heyward, "Show me your hands!"

Before he finished the phrase the second time, Tyner fired his weapon twice, hitting Heyward in the neck. Heyward remains at Medical University Hospital where family attorneys say he is unable to speak or move his legs. They say the 26-year-old man is paralyzed.

1. An extremely improbable scenario:

May 2015

A black, gun-wielding home-owner chasing white burglars off his property.
Suddenly police shows up.
They see white people running away from a black man with a gun.
What will happen next?

Yeah, I'm cynical as shit.

but I imagine they probably made an assumption that he was a burglar rather than the homeowner when they saw a black man with a gun.
