Neb)-Unicam Gives Final OK To Death Penalty Repeal

http://chadrad.com/newsstory.cfm?story=37485

Snip:

LINCOLN (AP) - Governor Pete Ricketts made a final pitch to lawmakers this to retain the state's death penalty law, but it had no impact as senators voted 32-15 to abolish capital punishment. Ricketts has vowed to veto the bill, but 32 votes would be enough to override a veto.

If that vote holds in an override, Nebraska would become the first conservative state to repeal the death penalty since 1973.

Ricketts, who announced last week that the state has bought new lethal injection drugs to resume executions, told reporters before the Unicameral vote that those voting for the bill were ignoring the position of their constituents.

I can't help it, I hate him.

If the death penalty had the efficacy its supporters claimed, you'd think Texas, Virginia and Florida would be crime-free paradises.

4. Nebraska has a unicameral legislature. One body of lawmakers, not two.

Talking Points Memo has a great overview of what happened in Nebraska.

A unicameral legislature is a much cleaner system of governance. I wish we could disband the federal House of Representatives and slightly increase the Senate. I bet we'd get much better traction on getting important matters addressed. As it is, with 535 legislators in Washington, they are all tired fighting one another for dominance and practically nothing gets done.

Nothing.
