I don't believe we'll ever know the true story here unless there was a security camera in the library that has video. The cops are being closed mouth about it, so they are obviously trying to get their lies straight:
Suspect shot and killed by police in Lyndhurst Public Library
LYNDHURST A borough man was shot and killed by police during an unspecified altercation with officers at the Lyndhurst Public Library Friday afternoon, officials said.
Kevin Allen, 36, was shot by police on the second floor of the public library at about 1:35 p.m. and transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Lyndhurst Police Chief James O'Connor said at a press conference shortly after the shooting.
Three police officers were involved in the incident, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said. Two were taken to the hospital for stress.
The circumstances that led to the death of Allen, of Lyndhurst, were not immediately revealed by law enforcement.
O'Connor would not say if Allen had a weapon, why police were initially called to the scene or if they'd had prior run-ins with the 36-year-old.

SMH
I wouldn't be surprised if later they'll claim he had a weapon. A throwdown is an easy thing with no video and no witnesses

(113,284 posts)1. it is a sad commentary that we can automatically assume that the
police are going to lie.

Cops are never truthful when speaking with a "suspect" and you must realize, EVERYBODY is a suspect to any cop.
There is no such thing as a good cop.

(113,284 posts)3. I think you misunderstood. we have seen so much of this that the
default setting now is that the police lie. having the police tell the truth is now an astonishing surprise.

(101,311 posts)4. A situation in which body cameras are needed; they claim he had a utility knife
and that they'd pepper sprayed him first. But all they were doing is arresting him for not turning up to a work release program:
Chief of Police James O'Connor said 36-year-old Kevin Allen "menaced" police with the utility knife before they shot him around 1:30 p.m. in the library's top floor.
"He was aggressive towards them....he charged at them with (the knife)," O'Connor said Friday night.
Allen was wanted by the Bergen County Sheriff's Office for failing to appear at a work release program last month and for contempt of court, spokesman Anthony Cureton said late Friday. Earlier, a law enforcement source said local police engaged Allen when he was spotted outside the library because he was wanted.
O'Connor said officers first tried to subdue Allen using non-lethal force, including using pepper-spray and a baton on him. Allen continued to charge at the officers with the large utility knife after police tried to stop him.
