Miami high school principal removed after social media post praising Texas cop in pool party video

Alberto Iber and his Facebook post that caused the controversy
Alberto Iber is in hot water after took to the comments section of a Miami Herald article on the Texas pool party to defend the Texas officer who pulled a gun on unarmed teens:
The Miami-Dade County school district announced Wednesday that Alberto Iber had been removed as principal after going online to defend a white Texas police officer who waved a gun at black teens while responding to a call about an unruly pool party.
In a brief statement, the district said employees are required to conduct themselves, both personally and professionally, in a manner that represents the school districts core values. The district said a replacement would be named shortly and that Iber would be reassigned to administrative duties.
<snip>
Alberto Iber sort of, kind of apologized:
When Iber realized his comment had caused outrage, he deleted it. Iber told New Times yesterday he did not realize the comment was linked to Facebook and would show his picture, name, and title.
I regret that I posted the comment as it apparently upset people and became newsworthy, Iber said. It was not my intent.
"Sorry if people were upset" is not a true apology. And thinking his comments were anonymous does not make the situation any better. Clearly Alberto Iber didn't really have any business managing the day-to-day functions of a school with a largely black student body. And now that he's on administrative duties with the school district, perhaps he'll have time to learn more on the students he is supposed to be serving and the daily challenges they face as young black men and women.

What a cheesy right wingy sort of apology.

Better hope your right wing boss isn't watching your Facebook for anything pro marriage equality.

(6,241 posts)It may have been an opinion that many here (including me) don't share, but it is his opinion.
I don't have to patrol my friends' facebooks. I have left leaning and right leaning people on my facebook. I see the pro marriage equality and reproductive rights posts, and the other side of the spectrum, just casually browsing.
What happens when my friend Bob Jones' boss, who went to a Right to Life meeting last week, from browsing facebook, and calling Bob into his office and firing him for his pro-choice post? Are you going to cheer for the boss getting rid of someone he doesn't agree with? Or because you agree with Bob's position on the issue, are you going to call the boss a bigot and suggest Bob sue his boss for something?

(75,855 posts)Doesn't seem like it. You're confusing a lot of things:
First he's not fired. There is no clear evidence he will be completely terminated. You inferred that, although it's wrong.
Second, he is in a position of power, so is not merely an employee.
Third, he is supposed to be providing leadership to the school employees, which is also full of minority students. Expressing opinion that could be INTERPRETED as disparaging of minority students is purely dumb. It's not the opinion, it's the stupidity that got him in trouble.
Fourth, his employer didn't see the post and get angry with the opinion. You made that part up. He got suspended because the school district was reacting to the negative feedback from the community. That's nearly the opposite of what you keep parroting.
That's why, so far, nobody here is agreeing with you.

(12,647 posts)Firing people for social media fuck ups is the new norm in America and has been for quite some time. They can also extract our bodily fluids on demand, so your point is kinda silly. This guy was happy to see a gun pulled on black teens in bathing suits. He was the principal of a school that was almost entirely minority students. Please do explain why parents would now trust their minority child in his care. I'm sure your logic will be quite entertaining.

(6,241 posts)Anyone can be fired for any post they make on social media. I don't post anything political at all on mine. I just post stuff about my kids and my dogs.
You're smiling about it now. But when it happens to you, or someone on our side of the spectrum, you won't be laughing about it.

Second, if it were to happen, I would be rightly horrified if my opinions, which have no bearing about my ability to do my job, expressed on my personal time at home, gets me fired. I'm horrified that it happens to anyone, whether it happens on the left or the right. The people that are cheering it, because they don't agree with the opinions being expressed, shock me. I don't want to give any side of the fight weapons that could be used against the other side.
The US is getting more and more polarized. If this kind of BS is allowed to stand, things are going to get a lot worse.
I hope this guy sues the pants off that school district.

(37,748 posts)"But when it happens to you..."
I imagine most people on DU are well aware of both the negative and positive consequences of speech, and will temper what is said on a platform that is public and that employers have access to.
However I do realize there are half-witted people who believe speech is, or should be, consequence free... it's a very convenient position.

(40,380 posts)This guy's comment relates directly to the responsibilities of his work.
It's as if a food service worker posted on social media something like, "Heh, heh, the customer was a prick so I spit in his food"
If a school administrator thinks that's appropriate behavior for a cop, one can reasonably ask if he allows himself or his staff to treat students in a similar manner.

(15,522 posts)You know why? Because the benefit of not having racist bigots as principals of our schools is worth the risk. No, people do not have to sit down and shut up and stop demanding equality because "it might happen to them" When equality is achieved, then it lessens the chance that "the same thing will happen to you" That is just a scare tactic used by those who know the tide is turning. Don't listen to it. The fight is worth it.
christx30
(6,241 posts)I'm saying that people shouldn't be fired for expressing a political opinion on social media. Your home life should be safe when it comes to your job. Unless you think it's ok for a non-smoking boss to be able to fire someone for smoking at home, as an example.
kcr
(15,522 posts)He wasn't fired for expressing a political opinion. He was fired for being a racist.

(2,065 posts)I actually do agree that this teacher needed to go. I certainly don't want my kid in the woman's class. But, that doesn't mean that the counter argument is completely devoid of merit.
Edit: ....or at this guy's school. I thought I was on the teacher's thread for a minute. She is an even bigger piece of work. Don't want my child around either.
kcr
(15,522 posts)This is nothing new. Now that the balance is tipping more equally and it's getting more dangerous for racists and bigots to speak their mind, suddenly it's a bad thing? Please.

(2,065 posts)I just mean that I'm not implying that racists should be protected. I think having a conversation on when a person should be fired for speaking out and when they should not be, without it being left to the whims of the powers to be, is not a crazy/stupid/racist idea. I have an ultra conservative boss, so I think the topic of being fired for expressed opinions is interesting.
Like I said before, we don't want racists teaching our children, so I support these firings. But a lot of people don't want socialists, gays, or non-Christians teaching their children.

(15,522 posts)Being a bigot in a position of power contributes to inequality. For a long time they've been getting away with it. Now, it's much harder for them because things are changing for the better. This is a good thing. Protection from your right wing boss does not have to mean tolerating bigots in positions of power. That is not true. You can feel empowered to stand up to your right wing boss and support equality.

If your opinion is too unpopular, you can be excluded from the group for the unpopular opinion. If one finds they mistakenly have an unpopular opinion, find someone else who has transgressed more, highlight them and hopefully folks will forget about your unpipylar opinion.
