Women escape to backyard She Sheds

HOUSTON --
Men have their caves, and now women have their sheds.

"She Sheds" are a new trend sweeping the nation that allow women to escape to their own personal private retreats, without leaving home.

Nestled behind Tamara Harbert's Houston home is her great escape into a little backyard bliss.

It's being away, without being away, which I love," said Harbert.

A She Shed is much different from a man cave, but the quaint 144 square foot bungalow serves a similar purpose.

The shed was originally built for their children by her husband Stuart. The project took nearly 9 months to finish.

"I wanted to build a playhouse and I looked online at existing projects and said, 'I want to see if I can try that myself,'" said Stuart Harbert.

To keep costs down, they used a lot of repurposed material from the Habitat for Humanity ReStore.

"The door, the windows are reclaimed. The bricks on the porch are also reclaimed bricks," Tamara Harbert said.

But as the children grew, it would not be a playhouse forever.

no one would bat an eyelash. Since they're spaces specifically for a woman to get away from all the demands of family for an hour or so of peace and quiet, they're conspicuous consumption.

One of them looks like it might have been a playhouse, retired when the kids outgrew it. The others look like adapted garden sheds and one is obviously a greenhouse.

No cute name for it; it's just the greenhouse but I do spend a lot of time out here.

Then I wouldn't have a giant tv sitting on the wall in our living room, and I wouldn't have computers everywhere, and games and components shoved in every nook and cranny in our house. He and our kids and the neighborhood kids could play in the basement!

The newer, larger of the two was where he stored his lawn tractor and gardening equipment. The smaller shed held his tools, a TV, radio, couch, and a refrigerator.

It is his man cave, nestled in the woods. He's got a computer, an ice chest for his beer, total privacy
and I get the entire house to myself all day.

We both do better in domestic captivity when we have long leashes, we have discovered.

Some are just a small single room, others might be more lavish, some have bathrooms and kitchenettes. Homes with casitas are a very popular selling point. They can be used as a quiet retreat for reading or meditation, and as private home offices, or your own separate studio for music, art, or yoga.

One sits on one side of the fire, the other on the other side.

They take turns feeding the fire.

They alternate going to the outhouse for the beer. That is where they keep the refrigerator.

My nephew has a trailer out back. He calls it his hunting cabin. Everyone else calls it The Love Shack.

It's a shed from Home Depot, which she and her husband fixed up and it's adorable. It has one lovely wicker chair and ottoman, a potting table, and a ceiling fan. Everything about it is pastel, soft, feminine, and is her space to get away from her husband and 3 sons. She laughs when she realizes that something like this wouldn't have appealed to her 20 years ago.

My partner and me are building one next year. It's what we refer to as as our "refined shed" project. It's going to be located down by the treeline and will have a heater, AC, electricity (obviously), peace and quiet and a great view. We are basing the design on a 12x20 free standing barn style shed. It will be insulated and have drywall and composite flooring. Simple but functional. It will have two workbenches for projects.

We are expecting that it will take a year in total to build.

Wives have to get away from kimosabe, no question about that.

Luckily, I do it mentally. I turn on the news 24/7 and he can't stand the news (just watches Judy and the other judges) or movies, or stuff I don't like).

And I love gardening, which I do everytime my back doesn't hurt and even if it does, and he hates gardening. I love wearing old shoes and clothes to work out there (but only do it if my hair is fixed a bit and lipstick). My yard is so pretty, and the birds are spoiled rotten.

You can get away mentally and get the same benefits, but I love the idea of the small castles.

You not going to just throw up an ugly shed.
So a shed was built and it fit in with the landscape and surrounding buildings and the wife said, that looks too nice to be a tool shed.

That is a true story and now my shop is in the basement, but I can use it in the winter time.
