Far-Right Pundits Call for Taking Down LGBT Pride Flag

Perhaps we should have seen it coming — in the wake of calls for Southern states to stop flying the Confederate battle flag after the mass killing at an African-American church in South Carolina, some right-wingers are urging an end to displays of the LGBT pride flag, which they claim symbolizes bigotry toward Christians.

Never mind that many Christians are accepting of LGBT people or are LGBT themselves, or that no one will be convinced by the far right’s rhetoric regarding the flag — these commentators are taking advantage of the moment to spew their homophobic hatred.

On his Focal Point radio show today, Bryan Fischer shared what Right Wing Watch sarcastically called “his typically well-reasoned and insightful thoughts” on the matter.

“If we are going to remove symbols of oppression from our culture,” he said, “if we come to the point where we say any flag that represents bigotry, any flag that represents hatred, any flag that represents slavery or oppression needs to be removed, then I want to suggest to you that the next flag to go ought to be the rainbow flag of the Gay Reich.”

The “gay lobby” has “a flag just like the Nazis had their flag,” Fischer added, and it represents “slavery and oppression and bigotry and prejudice and bias.”

They see how we do it (as in, when we decide to push and MEAN IT, it generally gets the attention it deserves from the general population) because we're not idiots over on this side. dah fawk, was there a time when gay people owned straight people and sold them into slavery separating them from their children, beating them when they slowed down work, not treating them for illness when they were sick, not setting bones that were broken, starving them at times or even most the time, working them literally to death, raping the women even if they were married to someone else and forcing them to have children who they would see mistreated? When was this time. Oh, then to top things off forcing them to fight in their armies to keep their people oppressed. Then flying the flag of oppression over the government buildings that are supposed to serve the needs of all citizens.

Absolutely boggles the mind how anyone can be so stupid as to swallow such nonsense.

The symbol for LGBT folks insisting they should be allowed to love each other without being discriminated against is somehow analogous to the symbol for waging war to keep a race of people enslaved?

In essence, by asserting a gay pride flag oppresses Christians Bryan Fischer is asserting that Christians are ignorant bigots.

While I'm not exactly a bigot (definition: a prejudiced person who is intolerant of any opinions differing from his own), I certainly don't care for the opinions of many of those who claim to be Christians.

Do many of those who post here seem to be Christians? Or any other religion?

Non-biblical based self-righteousness is however, a most noble and wonderful thing...

No doubt, those whose self-righteousness is predicated on the secular often fail to see it in themselves too-- which leads me to believe any relevant distinction between the two is alleged at best, more probably fictional.

However, as we do feel compelled to point, blame and pretend an objective sum exists rather than finding solutions, it's most likely merely a moot point rationalized away.

Any ex-confederate state can fly a flag to symbolize and remind people of their history and how they got where they are. All 13 states that seceded have their own flag.

NONE of them is the rectangular St Andrews Cross thing most people think of as "the confederate flag" I believe a TN regiment used it.... but otherwise it was invented (from the battle flag, which has several forms..... none of which are that "confederate flag" thing) by the KKK.

Indeed.... if confederate states flew correct flags, someone might actually learn something useful about the very important time in our history.

But they don't.

The rainbow flag has no history or symbolism remotely similar. Nor does...oh.... the Eco flag

Shall we take them down (if you can find one!) because they insult big oil companies????

They show such arrogant, narcissitic, stupidity. People don't fly LGBT or rainbow flags to "diss" anyone or anything, they fly them in support of their own beliefs. Guys and guys and women and women aren't getting married to spite the teahadist, they are in love and want to officially join together. It's like that blather that gay marriage will lead to fewer straight marriages, as if! There might be a few fake marriages that don't happen, but that's probably a good thing. My son marrying his partner of 8 years certainly doesn't diminish my 34 year marriage with my husband.

Because a symbol of denial of rights & equality is being villified, of course one that's stands for rights and equality should also be eliminated.

We've come to expect 'anti-logic' of that sort from the likes of fake-fired-from-hate-group Fischer. I suspect he's quite welcome at Westboro's bigot fests, too.

87. The government doesn't normally fly flags of nations that "lost" to us in one form or another

We don't put the Mexican, Spanish, French, English, etc. flag up. The Confederacy was essentially another country that USA beat so while citizens can display whatever flag they want to, the government shouldn't... Especially since it was put up in 1962 as a symbol of resistance to desegregation/civil rights.

We never fought the non-existent nation of, "Gaylandia," so the rainbow flag point makes no sense.

One flag is flown by people who want the right to be hateful bigots, and the other is flown by people who want the same rights the rest of us enjoy.

The two messages conveyed are direct opposites of one another. This is one of the worst attempts ever at false equivalency.

coming from typically stupid right wing idiots. Yes lets equate a flag that represents equal treatment of lgbt persons with the Nazi flag because you are butt hurt that your racist confederate flag purposely flown to unit the southern racist slave states flag is finally being shown for what it is. We should be hunting down these racist right wing terrorists and locking them up.

Jesus, having out with a group of mostly men preaching and teaching tolerance and love would view seeking the same as.... bad?

Every time some bigoted jackass makes a statement like this it turns more people into voters, and into liberal voters. The only people who agree with bullshit like this are going to vote against us till they die anyway.

110. On the route to work, every day I see the rainbow flag displayed at 2 churches.

Those churches have not renounced God or religion, as far as I can tell.

The rainbow flag is not the symbol of an antichrist. It's not intended to be
anti-church, anti-religion, or "anti" anything. Only a right-winger frames his
belief system in terms of the things and the people which he is against.

The flags that I see are at churches in Massachusetts, so it's not such a bold
move here. I believe they are an Episcopal and a Unitarian church.

Many hate-filled assholes claim to be religious or Christian. That does not make
ALL believers of God, no matter their denomination, people to be loathed or brow-
beaten into submission. Having faith in a God is not the problem; evil people who
twist that faith and pervert it for their own personal gain (antichrists) are the
problem. Bryan seems like a perfect example.

I really really wish I never heard of Bryan Fischer.
