What did George Carlin say about individuals versus groups? Individuals are OK but with groups you get patches and flags and uniforms and 3 am knocks on your door. Or something like that.

(14,498 posts).... reduced responsibility.
I think the psychologists call it "diffusion of responsibility" or something close.
People will behave in APPALLING ways in groups ; when it would NEVER occur to them to do so as individuals.
I didn't know Carlin took this on. I'd love to see it if you have a link.

Oh, but then I suppose the Saudi shitheels wouldn't want to attack their ideological bedmates. Never mind.
This is a disaster that is unfixable by any outsiders.

(23,272 posts)beyond that, we don't really understand the shifting alliances there.
It's got to be the regional players doing the heavy work - KSA, Qatar, the Kurds, Iran etc.
Not us.

(16,104 posts)This ISIL-thing started with an extended drought in Syria, food and water shortages, and a government that couldn't or wouldn't do anything about it for its people.
A little revolution, a lot of indiscriminate death, and here we are - shedding the vestiges of civilization, barbarity for personal survival, "religious" exploitation in justification, a reality of end-times apocalyptic vision.
I remember when Obama asked if maybe we should do something? And we said no...
Meanwhile, back in the USA, the west is running out of water, the government is rationing, impending crop disasters, diseases effecting our food chains...
And all we want to do is frack!

(75,480 posts)medical assistance with troops to protect the Red Cross or whoever did the on the ground aid to get the Syrians and other nations through this, but it seems either we bomb or do nothing. Humanitarian solutions just don't seem to be in our wheel house.

(19,981 posts)Maybe the Internet needs a giant jury system similar to DU?
Maybe the civilized world should come together on this issue and actually come up with a solution. As the spread of ISIS propaganda bullshit continues, more and more lives will be lost, young impressionable minds will be captured into these barbaric murderers beliefs, and more of our countries treasury will be depleted fighting in wars we do not belong in.

(10,136 posts)4 dozen people were shot on a beach in Tunisia on Friday and not one mention. A mosque was blown up in another country at the same time -not a mention. But footage of a bloviating publicity whore? That deserves half a news show (yeah, I'm looking at you, Maddow and O'Donnell). It's not important until it happens to Americans.

(25,704 posts)It cannot be discussed intelligently.
IS is winning. They have the support of millions. And all their enemies suck also.
Who should win this war? Hell if I know. Every side is horrible. Oh, but the Kurds you say? They are trying to carve out an ethno state a la Isreal. And when they take over a town the non Kurds are made to become refugees. But among the lot they are the most ok.
SAA will fight forever. Because a peace without them on top is genocide.
IS has a coherent ideology, runs fairly efficiently and has mass support.
Nusra is al quida.
FSA is slowly merging with nusra.
This fight will go on a minimum of 5 years, upper bound 15 more.

(26,060 posts)(that's a very silly idea)? That both (speaking about Saudi Arabia and Syria mostly) sides suck doesn't make it a topic that cannot be discussed.

(13,598 posts):-Those involving large numbers of Western ground troops.
:-Those not involving large numbers of Western ground troops.
I think that it is likely that any strategy in the former category will involve the West being drawn into a protracted, bloody, region-wide war with no end in sight.
I think it is likely that any strategy in the latter category will fail to contain ISIS, resulting in them growing, spreading, getting richer, more powerful and better armed, and committing more and worse atrocities.

On this thread at least.
Personally I think Napoleon's slogan of artillery destroys. Infantry just occupies fits here.
The Iraqi Army is not strong enough to destroy, but they would be strong enough to occupy after the USand helpers helicopters and planes destroy. It would take 1,000 sorties a day though, not the six or seven we're current;y doing.
It just depends on how much a people who believe in human rights are willing to tolerate.

We are being sold on our extended involvement in Syria, Iraq and the region. They are using memes that play well in social media but at the end of the day ISIS is still a Saudi and Qatari-backed militia of Sunni extremists helping advance the goals of Saudi Arabia and her allies (including the USA).
Again, ISIS is controlled by the Saudis, our allies. This is now well documented:
