Longtime Lake County School Board member Kyleen Fischer said her support for mandatory uniforms for the district's roughly 40,0000 students was sparked by the recent violent deaths of high school students in the area.
Fischer, a longtime School Board member who originally opposed requiring uniforms, said the Trayvon Martin shooting case and recent slayings of two Winter Park High School students "preyed" on her mind in recent weeks. The events, along with feedback from principals, prompted her to raise the contentious topic Monday evening.
"The impact of everything that's happening near us and around us it's just phenomenal," she said. "We want to keep our children safe."
Neither Martin nor the Winter Park High School students were on school grounds when the incidents happened, but Fischer said she wants students to be serious about education, human rights and their own preservation.
