Obama “just not an American”

DENVER — Colorado Congressman Mike Coffman is apologizing for comments he made at a fundraiser in Elbert County last weekend when he asserted that President Barack Obama is “just not an American.”

At the end of a speech about the downward trend in the economy, Coffman raised the issue of Obama’s citizenship.

“I don’t know whether Barack Obama was born in the United States of America. I don’t know that,” Coffman said. “But I do know this, that in his heart, he’s not an American. He’s just not an American.”

But, on Wednesday night, Coffman was apologizing — and explaining his comments

Another teabagger claims Obama is an "outsider" then issues an "oops" with qualifiers. These people are truly corrupt.

True. Notice the archetype "All American Boy" that's usually presented in media. marmar May 2012 #9

Misspoke is when you say "Betty and myself went to the malt shop" instead of "Betty and I." Misspoke is NOT saying "Barack Obama is some sort of strange alien halfbreed muslim socialist" when you meant to say "President Obama is an American just like you and me."

No surprise there. Many people can identify. It is an ugly fact that some Americans think they are more American than others. I think maybe it shocks others especially here at DU because many have never had such an irrational argument thrown in their face at every turn.

"Just not an American." What the hell does he mean? Not white enough? Not mainstream enough? Went to school in a different country? His mother married men who were foreign born? His papers aren't good enough? Any excuse to smear him. No substance. No sense. And yet they have such vocal supporters. Xenophobic McCarthyites.
