Minority babies outnumbered white newborns in 2011


May 17 (Bloomberg) -- Minority babies outnumbered white newborns in 2011 for the first time in U.S. history, the latest milestone in a demographic shift that’s transforming the nation.

The percentage of white newborns fell to 49.6 percent of children younger than a year old from April 2010 to July 2011, the U.S. Census Bureau said today.


.The trend is likely to have a far-reaching impact on the country’s political alignment, the nature of its workforce and on its economic future. Predominantly white, older enclaves in the Northeast and Midwest will increasingly rely on an expanding population of young Asians and Hispanics in the West and Sun Belt to support Social Security and other retirement programs.

“This is a fundamental tipping point signaling a change in our demographic structure for decades to come,” William Frey, a demographer and senior fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington, said in an e-mail.

6. I have given this some thought

I have no research to back this up but I believe as a group becomes more established (financial security, political involvement etc) that group becomes more conservative. Tiny sampling: my immediate neighborhood (middle-class) block is 13 houses. 7 non-white families. Interestingly many are first generation immigrants (Nigeria, Ghana and Honduras), they are all conservative. So I don't see an end to the GOP but more of a move away from white dominated.

15. My brother in law from Jamaica was also conservative. Unfortunately he was born and raised in a

nation that was ruled by his own race and he always looked down his nose at American blacks. He fell for the if they would just get a job and be willing to work BS and because poverty in his homeland was terrible he did not think of them as poor. He was wrong of course and I hope he has changed but I doubt it.

He has totally forgotten that someone helped him get over here so he could go to school, someone married him so he could stay over here and someone gave him a job so they could reach their minority hire goal. These are not assumptions - they are in his life facts. Fortunately my sister has raised their children including his daughter we adopted with a clearer view than he has.

Those born in this country do not come here wearing blinders. And thank goodness neither do most immigrants. I do not think they will all get rich enough to start voting rethug any time soon.

17. I think it has to do with perceived status, religion and taxes

after one gets financial stability.

I had one friend who was pro-choice...sort of. He thought women should have the right to choose but he was personally against abortion. He supported a lot of Democratic ideas/ideals but it was- Taxes - that really made him more conservative over time. The thought of having to pay taxes was so repellent to him that he fully went right. Money became more important than everything else. It defined him... along with designer clothes, the best that money could buy and all the status he thought it represented.


I have another friend (from the same country) who was working towards getting his citizenship here years and years ago. He has long since been a citizen. He too has the same views on choice/abortion.
He wanted to pay taxes. He wanted to because to him it meant that he had achieved citizenship. That was the status that meant something to him.

This is slightly off-topic, but whenever I see demographic studies like this that indicate minorities becoming the majority, I always wonder why they group both racial AND ethnic groups together. Asian and White are racial groups, but Hispanic is not. A person can be Hispanic, yet also be either White, Black, or Asian.
