Kucinich Ain't DEAD YET! ...Kucinich's Floor Speech Today as Congress Prepares for War with Iran!

I felt that Dennis gave some good arguments against the efforts being made to create an Incident against Iran..or WAR ...if it comes to that.

Speech to the House of Representatives

Thursday, May 17, 2012

Congressman Dennis Kucinich’s (D-OH) prepared speech to Congress follows. See video here.Congressman Kucinich is also distributing this flyer to Congressional colleagues. Additionally he recently spoke about Iran on the House Floor. See that video here and here. Kucinich will be back on the House Floor today at noon for a “one minute” speech. "We must not stumble into another war," he said.

"This week, Congress is considering two pieces of legislation relating to Iran. The first undermines a diplomatic solution with Iran and lowers the bar for war. The second authorizes a war of choice against Iran and begins military preparations for it.
H.Res.568: Eliminating the Most Viable Alternative to War

The House is expected to vote on H.Res. 568. Read the resolution. Section (6) rejects any United States policy that would rely on efforts to contain a nuclear weapons-capable Iran. Section (7) urges the President to reaffirm the unacceptability of an Iran with nuclear-weapons capability and opposition to any policy that would rely on containment as an option in response to Iranian enrichment.

This language represents a significant shift in U.S. policy and would guarantee that talks with Iran, currently scheduled for May 23, would fail. Current U.S. policy is that Iran cannot acquire nuclear weapons. Instead, H. Res. 568 draws the “redline” for military action at Iran achieving a nuclear weapons “capability,” a nebulous and undefined term that could include a civilian nuclear program. Indeed, it is likely that a negotiated deal to prevent a nuclear-armed Iran and to prevent war would provide for Iranian enrichment for peaceful purposes under the framework of the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons Treaty with strict safeguards and inspections. This language makes such a negotiated solution impossible.

At the same time, the language lowers the threshold for attacking Iran. Countries with nuclear weapons “capability” could include many other countries like Japan or Brazil. It is an unrealistic threshold.

The former Chief of Staff of Secretary of State Colin Powell has stated that this resolution “reads like the same sheet of music that got us into the Iraq war.”

H.R. 4310: Authorizing War Against Iran and Preparing the Military for it

While H. Res. 568 undermines our diplomatic efforts and lowers the bar for war, H.R. 4310, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2013 begins military preparations for war. Section 1221 makes military action against Iran a U.S. policy. Section 1222 directs our armed forces to prepare for war.

SEC. 1221. DECLARATION OF POLICY.

(a) Findings- Congress makes the following findings:

(2) At the same time, Iran may soon attain a nuclear weapons capability, a development that would threaten United States interests, destabilize the region, encourage regional nuclear proliferation, further empower and embolden Iran, the world's leading state sponsor of terrorism, and provide it the tools to threaten its neighbors, including Israel.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), as well as U.S. and Israeli intelligence, have all agreed that Iran does not currently have a nuclear bomb, is not building a nuclear weapon and does not have plans to do so. Both U.S. and Israeli officials also agree that a strike on Iran would only delay their nuclear program and actually encourage them to pursue a nuclear weapon.

Sustained, diplomatic engagement with Iran is the only way to ensure transparency and prevent a nuclear-armed Iran. Rejecting or thwarting any inspections-based deal we are currently seeking with Iran, even when analysts are expressing guarded optimism that a near term deal is achievable, makes pre-emptive military action against Iran more likely.

(7) In order to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, the United States, in cooperation with its allies, must utilize all elements of national power including diplomacy, robust economic sanctions, and credible, visible preparations for a military option.

Pursuing these non-diplomatic options, contrary to popular myth, does not help negotiations. U.S. policy toward Iran for the last three decades has primarily taken the form of economic sanctions, threats and isolation. None of these things has created meaningful change in the behavior of the Iranian government or achieved the transparency we seek. In fact, history has demonstrated that sanctions often preclude war; they do not prevent it. Sanctions hurt the same ordinary Iranians that we claim to support, and undermine their efforts to encourage democratic change in their country. Threatening military action against Iran can only undermine sensitive and critical diplomatic negotiations that could be our last chance to achieve the transparency and cooperation we seek from the Iranian government.

(8) Nevertheless, to date, diplomatic overtures, sanctions, and other non-kinetic actions toward Iran have not caused the Government of Iran to abandon its nuclear weapons program.

The United States, IAEA and Israel have all publically recognized that Iran does not have a nuclear weapons program. In a January 2012 interview on CBS’ Face the Nation, Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta stated unequivocally that Iran is not trying to build a nuclear weapon. This clause further ignores that the U.S. and Iran have barely engaged in direct negotiations. Prior to last month’s negotiations, the U.S. and Iran had only engaged in 45 minutes of direct talks since 2009.

(b) Declaration of Policy- It shall be the policy of the United States to take all necessary measures, including military action if required, to prevent Iran from threatening the United States, its allies, or Iran's neighbors with a nuclear weapon.

This is an authorization for the use of military force against Iran. It ignores the warnings of both current and former U.S. top military brass who have spoken in opposition to the use of military force against Iran, including former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, and current Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta. A February 2012 poll demonstrated that less than 20% of the Israeli public supports an Israeli strike on Iran if approved by the United States. Congress must avoid the same mistakes it made in the Iraq war and reject any language that can be construed as authorizing war against Iran.

SEC. 1222. UNITED STATES MILITARY PREPAREDNESS IN THE MIDDLE EAST.

Section 2 (A) pre-positioning sufficient supplies of aircraft, munitions, fuel, and other materials for both air- and sea-based missions at key forward locations in the Middle East and Indian Ocean;

(B) maintaining sufficient naval assets in the region necessary to signal United States resolve and to bolster United States capabilities to launch a sustained sea and air campaign against a range of Iranian nuclear and military targets, to protect seaborne shipping, and to deny Iranian retaliation against United States interests in the region;

(D) conducting naval fleet exercises similar to the United States Fifth Fleet's major exercise in the region in March 2007 to demonstrate ability to keep the Strait of Hormuz open and to counter the use of anti-ship missiles and swarming high-speed boats.

A plain reading of these provisions in H.R. 4310 taken together with H.R. 568 makes it clear: Congress is setting the stage for war with Iran.

I respect Dennis's decision to use activism in ways other than being in Congress. I think considering the makeup of Congress, he can do more from the outside. I will miss him, though.

The premise is patently ridiculous. In fact it would be even if we hadn't been getting people saying "War with Iran REAL SOON NOW!!!1" since 2003 or so.

4. That's only because there are many FOLKS fighting against it in the MIC and elsewhere....

but, that's why the fight against this war needs to go on and be broadcast...far and wide.

There ARE FOLKS working against this who saw what Iraq/Afghanistan Invasions have done to American Power and Credibility.

Those voices need to be heard because the POWER against them from the MIC and Corporate Media control so much more.

It's important that those who've seen the intelligence and aren't NeoCons or those working for Corporate/Media Intrusts get THEIR VOICES OUT THERE.

Dennis Kucinich's Speech at least get's the OTHER SIDE of this OUT THERE....

It's a good read. Unless you feel AMERICA and it's People can handle the COSTS of ENDLESS WARS across our Globe...with No Consequences to our Society...Democracy....Health of our Economy?

There is precisely zero risk of a war with Iran. You might as well worry at this point about a war with Canada.

Coleen Rowley: Barbara Lee Was Right! Amy Klobuchar Is Wrong!

Barbara Lee turned out to be 100% right about the wrongful wars launched on Afghanistan and Iraq and she’s certainly right to try and stop an even more catastrophic and illegal pre-emptive war on Iran!

In the last month, “No War on Iran ”groups in Minnesota have personally visited the district offices of Congresspersons Betty McCollum, John Kline, Keith Ellison, Tim Walz and Chip Cravaack as well as Senator Franken’s office. Groups have delivered the message (in the form of postcards and petitions) that constituents naturally and overwhelmingly favor diplomacy over pre-emptive war on Iran .

Unfortunately, despite peace groups imploring Senator Klobuchar not to sign the Graham-Lieberman-Casey Resolution (S.R. 380) that basically curtails diplomatic efforts and makes war the only option and despite the obvious actions of John McCain, Joe Lieberman and Lindsey Graham (nicknamed the “three Amigos”) attempting to undercut Obama’s foreign policy and institute their own, Klobuchar went ahead and signed their pro-war resolution in the first week of April.

This is the response I received to the email I sent her. Note she never mentions the Graham-Lieberman-Casey "Anti-Containment" Senate Resolution (S.R. 380) which was mentioned in the article in Huffington Post & I mentioned in my email to her. And, despite referencing other House Resolutions she ignored my question about whether or not she supported Barbara Lee's H.R. 4173.

[div class = "excerpt"]
I believe Iran's present course of action represents a threat to the United States, our allies in the Middle East, and the international community. Iran has defied repeated demands from the United Nations Security Council to stop enriching nuclear fuel and to fully disclose all information regarding its nuclear program. Compelling Iran to abandon its support for terrorism, promote the rights of its citizens, and terminate its nuclear enrichment program is critical to meeting the goal of long-term stability in the Middle East and around the world.

I have long supported using all diplomatic, economic, and political tools available to press Iran to cooperate with the international community. That is why I voted to support H.R. 2194, the Comprehensive Iran Sanctions, Accountability, and Divestment Act of 2010, which was signed into law on July 1, 2010. This law expands sanctions against Iranian financial institutions as well as the crucial imports of gasoline, related fuels, and other services that facilitate the production of gasoline. I am also a cosponsor of S. 1048, the Iran, North Korea, and Syria Sanctions Consolidation Act of 2011. This bill would tighten restrictions on Iran by sanctioning affiliates of the Revolutionary Guard, foreign firms that participate in energy-related joint ventures with Iran, and any providers or purchasers of militarily useful equipment to or from Iran. Unlike H.R. 1905, a bill in the House of Representatives, S. 1048 does not prohibit diplomatic communication between U.S. and Iranian officials. S.1048 also contains provisions aimed at supporting the efforts of Iranian human rights activists.

Again, thank you for taking the time to contact me. One of the most important parts of my job is listening to what the people of Minnesota have to say to me. I am here in our nation's capital to do the public's business and to serve the people of our state. I hope you will contact me again about matters of concern to you.

Sincerely,
Amy Klobuchar
United States Senator

I can't think of vote I regret more than the one I cast for Klobuchar 6 years ago - she's even worse than I was afraid she'd be, but it was one of those "lesser of two evils" deals & it was one that proves the lesser of evils is still evil.

that it hasn't happened YET. There should not even be talk of this, yet it never goes away because the war-mongers NEVER give up.

We know for a fact now, that in the end, even Bush refused to go to war with Iran, which caused a major rift between him and Cheney, who would do it in a 'someone else's heart beat'.

So to say we should not worry because it hasn't happened despite the warnings for so long, is to ignore WHY it hasn't happened.

To ignore these madmen who will do it, and who will lie, and who Congress appears to be afraid to tell to 'go to hell', is insane.

At the same time, Iran may soon attain a nuclear weapons capability, a development that would threaten United States interests, destabilize the region, encourage regional nuclear proliferation, further empower and embolden Iran, the world's leading state sponsor of terrorism, and provide it the tools to threaten its neighbors, including Israel.

That right there is LIE. What is doing in front of Congress? Even Israeli Intel has now come out and actually called Netanyahu a 'dangerous warmonger' and has stated that it is a lie to say that Iran is developing a nuke. They also have stated that it is a lie to say that Amadinijad has threatened Israel with extinction.

Now the whole world knows these are lies, just like the Iraq lies. So what is OUR Congress doing even entertaining them?? And are you serious that we should ignore the continued and relentless effort to get this country into a war with Iran?

THANK YOU Dennis Kucinich for your tireless efforts to stop this madness.

Bill Clinton wanted to bomb Iran - the military said no.

The have undertaken war games that have shown that the US cannot win.

Obama has been pressuring Israel NOT to go to war with Iran.

Most of the people in Israel DO NOT WANT to go to war with Iran.

Hence Stuxnet.

It has little to do with Kucinich or David Swanson.

And it befuddles the mind, because of all this information has been posted on DU.

Added:

It is one of the prime reasons there has been no assistance for the Syrian opposition - because a war would involve Iran.

Where eg did they get all those weapons? Reports today reveal that the US has been sending in arms for months, much as they did in Libya. No point in pretending anymore that the Libyan 'revolution' was actually the people of Libya. Hillary Clinton basically admitted that this is how the US will wage wars in the future, she used Libya as an example. I believe they are calling it 'smart war' now.

Use proxies, such as the Qatar military as they did in Libya. I knew those guys in camos were not Libyan 'rebels'. Arm the 'opposition' there is always a group in every country who hate the government, find them and arm them. Drop intel people from allied countries into the 'theater', as happened in Libya, and some of them were discovered as I'm sure everyone recalls. Then have the 'opposition' ask for help from NATO, regardless of whether the country is a member of NATO or not. NATO will go through the motions of 'discussing' it, but will provide the air attacks needed to take out the targeted country's weapons, as in all of our wars now. The excuse will always be 'humanitarian intervention'.

Problem this time is that people are no longer fooled by these tactics and the actual residents of the targeted countries are more angry at the outside interference which is causing, as it did in Libya most of the violence. Of course you cannot depend on Western media for facts, but then we've all known this since the Bush years.
