Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clintons campaign defended her use of a personal e-mail account while secretary of state after two U.S. watchdogs asked were said to ask for a criminal probe into whether potentially classified data was jeopardized.
She followed appropriate practices in dealing with classified materials, Clinton campaign spokesman Nick Merrill said Friday in a statement.
The inspectors general from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the State Department wrote to the Justice Department requesting a criminal investigation into whether e-mails in Clintons private account may have contained classified information, a U.S. official with knowledge of the request said.
No decision has been made yet at the department about whether to start an investigation, according to a Department of Justice official who asked for anonymity because the matter wasnt yet public.
The request followed a June 29 memo the two officials sent to Undersecretary of State Patrick Kennedy, saying that hundreds of e-mails in Clintons private account may improperly contain classified material, said the person with knowledge of the request, who asked for anonymity to discuss a potential legal matter.
