http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/sideshow/man-fathered-30-kids-needs-break-child-support-140439765.htmlThe state already takes half his paycheck and divides it up, which doesn't amount to much when Hatchett is making only minimum wage. Some of the moms receive as little as $1.49 a month. The oldest child is 14 years old.
Hatchett explains how he reached such a critical mass: He had four kids in the same year. Twice.
Back in 2009 when Hatchett was in court to answer charges that many of the mothers were not receiving child support, he had 21 children. At the time, he said he was not going to father any more kids, but he ended up having nine more in the past three years.
Are these really the genes we want perpetuating themselves?
I love the phrase, "He ended up having nine more"... yes, "ended up". Because there's absolutely no agency on his part here.

At some point the women involved (or their parents) have to start taking responsibility for themselves in enabling this mess...

(297 posts)and will continue to do so until women become more selective over who they will breed with. this strategy will lead to numerous offspring, but each individual offspring we would assume has a lower chance of survival.
that's not to say that natural selection doesn't also favor the monogomous, father-stays-around strategy. this strategy leads to less children (capped at 1/9 months) but each child getting more parental attention is more likely to survive and reproduce themselves.
Dawkins discusses this more eloquently than i ever could

(17,055 posts)Neither of us were able to get child support and the laws were pretty strict about that too. There were just too many ways for the fathers to go off the grid with jobs that paid in cash so they always got the sympathy of the courts because they were not employed (ha).
It wasn't easy but we both worked two and three jobs and we supported our own children.
Neither of us bad mouthed the fathers to the kids and they ended up having pretty good relationships with their dads.
What's done is done so it was better for our children to just let sleeping dogs lay. We lived but it wasn't easy.

(45,850 posts)at what point do the 'baby mama's' bear some responsibility? I ask because I see quite a bit of condemnation here for Hatchett and it's deserved but little or nothing about the women involved, 30 kids by 11 moms averages to 2.72 kids per mom meaning he had more than 1 child by several of the women involved, so they did not figure out that he was a 'bad bet' to put it mildly?
IMO the responsibility should be shared and BTW I have no idea if welfare is involved or to what degree but it should be noted that in most states when the mother is on welfare child support is in reality remuneration to the state and does little to nothing to improve the child's life

(31,011 posts)So, I would say they are taking responsibility. Of course both he and the women could have used a little thing called contraceptives to avoid the side-effect of pregnancy.
So, neither didn't. A pregnancy resulted. Mothers exercised their right to choose by having the babies. The mothers are raising them and he is required to pay child support as would anyone else.
Shared custody is an option, but he may not be able to make enough time in the month to give these 30 children any kind of quality time.
I do wonder if he was honest with these women about his numerous other children.

(45,850 posts)the greatest responsibility for the children in these kind of situations not to mention the pregnancy and child birth women should take some responsibility for their reproductive rights IMO

years ago I worked with a guy that could have been this guys 'big brother' so to speak, but the guy I worked with used to bring a photo album to work with him, he was 24 at the time and had like 10 kids by 7 different women, he was rather good looking and tried to use this as part of his come on, I had to ask wtf is this a breeding book or what? he claimed it was to show he was a "good dad" to his kids and dependable too and again

(6,761 posts)So 11 different women made the choice to have sex with this known deadbeat.
And 11 different women made the choice to have this known deadbeat's kids... some repeatedly.
At what point do these 11 different women have to be responsible for their choices?
At what point does having sex with Desmond Hatchett, become essentially the same acts as taking a trip down to the sperm bank?
I'm not saying this loser has no responsibility to pay for his brood.
But if your baby mama number 11 and you know hes a deadbeat who hasn't been paying for the last 29 kids... 3 of which are yours... and you decide to get knocked up again... who is to blame when, surprise surprise, he doesn't pay for number 30?
cynatnite
(31,011 posts)I'm not saying the women have no responsibility here. Of course, they do. More than likely they're the ones that are doing the raising of the children. He is expected to fulfill his end of the deal by paying child support.
Of course, the man and the women involved should have used some kind of contraceptives.
I would think after baby number 10 or 15, the man would have asked himself if he should get a vasectomy.

(4,398 posts)I realize a large portion of the population doesn't have a father figure in their life.. but this jerk seems intent on having 30 kids, and not giving a SHIT about any of the kids he's fathering and not planning on being around to watch them grow up.
At what point can you call this gross neglect, and arrest him for this? Especially since some of the "women" he's knocking up are 19 - 20 years old. Sure.. they "SHOULD" know better.. but to be fair, they are having 1 - 4 babies.. he's having 30.
I have always thought that forced sterilization is not something that the government should ever be involved in... but then I read stories like this and wonder if there shouldn't be exceptions to a rule.
