President Obama Arms Citizens With Information On New, Restrictive Voting Laws

The Obama campaign is trying to fight new, restrictive voter registration laws with information for its supporters, hoping they will navigate stricter rules and still register to vote and register others. The effort is a sign that, as this point, the campaign is less focused on trying to reverse these laws and more focused on trying to live within them.

On Friday, the campaign launched a website called gottavote.org, which offers a state-by-state rundown of the voting rules. A companion website offers the same information in Spanish.

“It’s a one stop shop for getting the facts on voting,” Bob Bauer, the campaign’s general counsel, told reporters. The campaign also released a video telling the story of an elderly Tennessee woman who had to jump through multiple hoops to get a new voter ID card under a new state law, and it plans a “weekend of action” this weekend to register voters and train volunteers on various voter rules.
