I think this old white guy finally gets it.

I saw a young man speaking about BLM, probably in his early 20s, and he said (paraphrasing) 'Yeah, black lives matter. But they only seem to matter when they've been taken from us. It's the daily lives we live that matter too."

Yeah, that makes so much sense. What's the phrase? Lives of quiet desperation? Jobs are hard to come by but if you get a good one it's because you're an affirmative action hire, it can't possibly be because you're qualified and work hard. Driving while black seems to be more of a problem all the time. Some clerk will follow you around the department store watching you. Every day in so many ways.

I've said before that there is no way I can really understand the black experience because reality is the world as you perceive it and perceptions are formed by life experience. I wish I knew who that young man is so I could thank him for being so instructive in only one sentence.
