Mitch McConnell Acknowledges Difficulty In Blocking Iran Deal

GEORGETOWN, Ky. (AP) — President Barack Obama has "a great likelihood of success" in his showdown with congressional Republicans on the Iran nuclear deal, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell grudgingly acknowledged on Monday.

The GOP-led Senate and House are expected to turn down the deal next month, with the Kentucky Republican calling it flawed and House Speaker John Boehner criticizing the accord. The deal with Tehran and world powers would curb Iran's nuclear program in exchange for relief from economic sanctions.

Obama has pledged to veto a congressional resolution of disapproval. The question then becomes whether opponents of the accord can muster the votes to override the president.

Offering a preview of the struggle, McConnell talked about the difficulty in achieving an override. Obama needs 34 Senate Democrats to sustain a veto, and 20 have announced they are backing the deal. In the House, 146 Democrats are necessary to sustain a veto and 48 have expressed their support for the accord, compared to 10 opponents.

"He can win by getting one-third plus one of either house," McConnell told a business group in his home state of Kentucky. "So he's still got a great likelihood of success."

Imagine that the Republicans, with the support of enough Democrats, reject the Iran deal and override the President's expected veto. Does this kill the international agreement entirely? Or does it remove the United States from the nations that collaboratively negotiated the deal? Has anyone who opposes the deal articulated any resulting scenarios (that are based in reality)?

3. Sanctions

I know the UN has approved the deal. If the veto was over ridden then only the US sanctions would remain in place as the other countries involved have made it clear that they will not continue to enforce the sanctions. The U.S. is one of six countries who negotiated this deal. However the Republicans act as if we are the only nation involved in the negotiations. I am truly amazed at the sheer stupidity shown by those on the right. Anything Obama successfully negotiates they are against. If Obama said the sky was blue the republucans would say it was azure and accuse Obama of abusing the Office.

Of course, you're correct, Organism. President Obama has made it clear that the only alternative to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action is to involve the military. Actually, I already knew that and my questions were rhetorical, I guess. Still, the warmongering is unconscionable and nearly unbelievable.
