"The group that I'm representing was outraged by the sign," Haggans said. Those students wanting the sign taken down because they say "sagging pants" is culturally associated with African Americans.
"Its politically insensitive to certain groups. They felt like they were being targeted," Bell said.
"We certainly want to apologize for any misunderstanding or miscommunication, but there was not a particular group or individual that was targeted," Dr. Lewis A. Shepherd, Jr., Vice President of Student and External Affairs said. Shepherd continued to say the school does not have a dress code, but he has high expectations for his student body.
"We do a dis-service to students if we do not teach those values while they're here," Shepherd said.

(12,151 posts)Last time I saw it was two white 20-something hipsters (?) at a coffee shop. More power to whatever anyone wants to do with their clothes, but I couldn't understand how they could even walk with their jeans belted fully below their butts.
Not one to stare, but I caught myself looking trying to figure out how it even worked.
I don't see how making it "against the rules" makes any sense, but it was mystifying from a pure Laws of Physics point of view.
'Merica. Hell yeah.

(3,937 posts)The irony of writing "EXCESSIVE LOUDNESS" in all caps and the "RUDE BEHAVIOR" of using including an obvious racist dog whistle is no doubt lost on Shepherd.
I'm thinking their customers are being over-charged since tuition need not include paying for a Phd whose job is "External Affairs" (?)
Meddling in 'student affairs' is "RUDE BEHAVIOR" and promoting sexist and racist ideas is a "dis-service to students" that the University not only tolerated but paid for.

I still don't get the pants at the knees thing. What if you have to run?
But, not my pants, not my problem.

(3,208 posts)As a middle aged white woman who wears "comfortable" clothes and often can be seen hoisting up my sagging pants. I have often thought the more people with the sagging pants, the better my advantage in a zombie apocalypse!!!
I'm not the only one who thinks that!

(21,054 posts)I now see students on their way home from high school and my first thought is: "How in the hell did the parents let that kid out of the house dressed like that?!?!?!?"
Then...I remember going into the Girls' Bathroom before classes started and rolling up my skirt until it was very, very short!

(10,164 posts)As long as saggy pants aren't flashing the wearer's junk, I fail to see an issue with allowing them to look laughable.

(16,245 posts)I sort of wonder at the practicality of it. How do they even manage to walk?

(10,164 posts)I don't want to start a beef, should they realize I'm laughing at them...but that saggy pants look is so comically silly, that it takes a real effort of will.

(301 posts)is disrespectful and unprofessional. I have no problem with dress codes that teach the opposite of that. I can see how some might see this as a dog whistle but, as others here have said, it's hardly an exclusively black phenomenon. And when legislation is brought about it, black lawmakers are often leading the way.
The school could have communicated this a better way though and probably avoided the headache.
