(CBC News) Toronto police warned hackers of the Ashley Madison infidelity website that their actions "won't be tolerated," and said there are two unconfirmed suicides linked to the breach.
"This hack is one of the largest data breaches in the world," said Staff Supt. Bryce Evans at a Monday morning news conference.
More than 30 million email addresses and some credit card data were released as a result of the hack last month.
"Your actions are illegal and won't be tolerated," said Evans about a case also now being investigated by Canada's privacy commissioner.
He didn't give any further details where the unconfirmed suicide cases may have occurred. Evans also said there have been reports of hate crimes connected to the hack. ..................(more)

(9,527 posts)But especially in a case like this where it can be assumed that the people voluntarily signed up for the site. I don't have a lot of sympathy for the majority of the people on the site.

I agree that they shouldn't be cheating on their spouses, but let's not pretend that some people may commit suicide over this. People will get divorces, lose jobs, lose children and be humiliated in their communities.

(37,748 posts)The divorces, job losses, and humiliation will stem directly from their own choices and actions. One simple, easy, convenient and fantastic way to avoid adultery-related divorce, adultery-related job-loss and adultery-related humiliation is to just avoid adultery.

If you have no sympathy for the members of the site it means you have dehumanized them. The best evidence of that is your denial that being outed as an adulterer could be a proximate cause in their suicide.

Our actions often result in consequences, a lesson most adults should know by this stage of their lives. He chose to commit/attempt adultery. No one forced him to.
"Pretty sure he would not kill humself but for his indictment."
That indictment being wholly predicated on his attempted adult, hence, it may be more accurate to state "Pretty sure he would not kill himself but for his adultery."

(25,704 posts)So take what I say with the necessary tablet of salt.
But I am a lawyer. A trial lawyer to be specific. In every tort, when discussing proximate cause, the standard is A proximate cause, not THE proximate cause. One among many. For example, a doctor misses an operable tumor on an x-ray. The cancet is THE proximate cause of the eventual death, but A proximate cause is missing the tumor when treatment probably would have helped.
So if his corruption went undetected, probably no suicide. He lived quite a while with it undetected.

Having said that, I don't really see anything particularly condemning about this 'cheating site', in and of itself. People have all kinds of marriages and all kinds of kinks. You just never know what other peoples' relationships are about.
