General Discussion Forum Question(s) Poll

Some DU hosts are having a discussion about GD content. This involves light-hearted or Loungy-type OPs posted in GD. Occasional cat or animal pictures, satire about GD itself, personal stories of GD regulars. The kinds of OPs that don't really have anything to do with the SoP but since not everybody cares for the Lounge (or Help and Meta), they prefer to post here. (like this poll for example - it really is a Meta issue, but it is strictly ABOUT what regulars in GD prefer - in addition you can't post polls in Meta).

GD doesn't need to be all serious all the time, but it might be better for decorum if the jokes were kept to a minimum.

While cat pics maybe should be in the lounge and this poll in Help and Meta (if polls could be posted), many people only post at GD.
I used GD only for almost the first year I was on DU, not because I wanted to post in the wrong area but because I didn't understand Forums and Groups. I discovered the use of groups and forums only when I wanted to post on a subject which was strictly forbidden in GD.

I know now that there is a list of all forums and groups with explanations as to the purpose of each, but I didn't know this until I had a post locked with a suggestion to move to the more appropriate location. Perhaps GD should be the clearing house which many people use it for, with that understanding or maybe there should be a quick link always on the top of each page which goes to this detailed information about groups and forums, if it is causing an issue for GD to be used in ways not intended by the hosts.

Usually when I sign on I review the front page then go to latest threads. Latest threads show GD and most forums and groups, but I know of at least one which it doesn't (or for some reason mine didn't). When someone post any original post they want people to read it and reply. If using the correct location also limits those who will see it will possibly keep people from using that location. Perhaps a way of easily knowing if the group or forum will also post in Latest Thread would help. (please correct if I have missed this or am wrong as to some groups or forum not posting to Latest Thread)

Those who set up DU have given us numerous topics with many groups or forums in each to choose from to post and still there are times I can't decide just where to post, some because it doesn't seem to fit in any and others because it could fit it several. But, for me at first groups and forums were a bit intimadating because of the phrasing of the purpose, some can sound like a "self admiration society" not wanting the other side of the issue, and the host "super powers".

When I post I try to chose the best location and attempt to not get "personal", respect other's opinions, refrain from profanity and attempt never use terms which will offend, I also will apologize if I do offend (and will admit if I discover I am wrong). Being I have never had a post blocked and have only had one locked I think I am doing an ok job. I think this is true for most of those here on DU and any failing to follow the rules are only from not understanding the site.

I can certainly over look posts which may be in GD but should be elsewhere and in all honestly when I am on Latest Thread I don't even pay attention to which group or forum the post is from. If the discussion was posting cute cat pics in the National Security and Defense or LGBT I may feel this is a bigger issue but not GD.

This of course just my opinion, I look forward to seeing the opinion of others.
