Obama is now 1 vote away from Iran deal.

Chris Coons and Bob Casey back Iran deal, putting Obama one vote from major diplomatic victory

Sens. Chris Coons (D-Del.) and Bob Casey (D-Pa.) have decided to support the Iran nuclear deal, putting President Obama on the brink of a major diplomatic breakthrough that will allow him to fully implement the controversial deal over the objections of the Republican-led Congress.

Coons's decision, disclosed in an exclusive interview with The Washington Post, delivered a powerful blow to opponents of the plan because the Delaware Democrat had previously voiced some of the deepest skepticism about the controversial deal. It came as Casey announced support for the deal and left Obama needing just one more vote in the Senate to claim victory.

Coons reached his decision after many weeks of deliberation that included long talks with top administration officials — including his political mentor, Vice President Biden — and an exchange of letters with President Obama that codified the assurances he received about the pact's implementation.

Looks like Obama will not even need to find his veto pen to overrule the 12% approval rated GOP controlled Congress - one poll the usually poll-happy media will never talk about, ever.

rejection of everything the neo cons made US policy for decades. It is really that big a change. The world welcomes our change.

It is no surprise that the Republicans are 100% against it - they have been 100% against everything Obama has done. For the Democrats, this really is a sea change and Netanyahu and all other party leaders (except Meretz with 5 seats on the Knesset) are not just against against it but VERY VERY against it.

It is hard to describe the amount of lobbying by many usually not all that political Jewish organizations. A friend of mine quit Haddassah after they called her twice to call her representatives to get them to vote against Obama. This really is tearing apart some Jewish communities. This is sending loyal Democrats out begging their representatives to vote against this. I can imagine this is tough.

The money behind this is partly right wing Jews - Adelson is obviously the one pushing Haddassah, to which he gives huge donations. It is not JUST AIPAC, but they alone committed $40 million.

9. Sen. Wyden, where are you on this?

I'm hoping that Wyden's holding off on an announcement so that the knuckleheads running all those ads for moar war keep spending their money fruitlessly.

The latest ad by some ad hoc corporation features some guy who says his father died in the barracks bombing in Lebanon talking about how Iran can't be trusted, so we apparently shouldn't conduct any negotiations with Iran. I'd like to ask him what his alternative is: Blow every Iranian everywhere to smithereens? How does Iran's record of trustworthiness compare, in his opinion, to the trustworthiness of the United States? And would the trustworthiness of the United States be enhanced or diminished if we unilaterally junked a deal that we painstakingly negotiated with six other countries?

The Washington Post has been doing an ongoing whip count on the Iran deal and Wyden is the only Democrat they list as "Leaning No". Here is the quote from Wyden that they include

" I was skeptical that Iran’s leaders would agree to dismantle their nuclear weapons program and I have questions about whether this agreement accomplishes that, particularly in light of Iran’s history on this issue."

Are those automatically lifted?

Or, since they were imposed by Congressional action, is Congressional action required to lift them? (If so, imagine the drama that will likely play out over that!)

Tue Sep 1, 2015, 05:59 PM
Sep 2015

First - almost all coverage I've seen or read on both MSM and left leaning outfits frame this as a deal between Obama and Iran. It is not. Other countries that helped with the negotiations include Russia, Great Britain, France, China Germany and is supported 15 to 0 on the U.N. Security Council.

Secondly, anybody against this is out of their mind and stupid and is a useful idiot for the Military Industrial Complex. This deal is the best thing to happen to the Middle East Since President Carter negotiated a peace between Egypt and Israel back in the late 70's.

The fear mongering drummed up by wealthy friends of Israel (My Israel, right or wrong) is getting really aggressive. I see commercials against it all the time on TV now. To what end? What do these people want? Do they know anything at all about the Iran of today? I'm no expert, but their people are just like us. They want to own a home have a good job, and raise hsppy and healthy kids, just like us here in the USA. There are still some bombastic hardliners that do the "Death to America" recitation, but they're in the same wingnutisphere as Netanyahu, Cruz, Trump and all those other proponents of "war always fixes everything, even thought it never has ever in the past since WW2." Why do they want war for what appears to be war for it's own sake.

Just go back and get a "better deal" WTF? This was negotiated by the most powerful countries on earth and our Diplomats included some of the best diplomacy and nuclear arms control experts on the planet. This was a deal crafted by professional to negotiate peace deals to the worlds benefit without stupid wasteful tragic and cruel wars.

Like Col. Wilkerson said; Those that push for this should be the first to enlist their children, because thats what war does - it wastes the precious lives of children and young adults for the sake of ego and arrogant stupidly and fear.

Have we not evolved? Do we want to consider there's a possibility that we no longer need to solve problems the way they did in ancient Rome? Have we not advanced somewhat to be a more enlightened and courageous stewards of the earth? What sort of monsters create human misery on the scale of armed conflict that never ever ever produces the outcome they profess to want?

I resent and loathe those public features that call for "getting a better deal". Where the fuck were you when this was all being crafted? Do you not know how to participate in your own government?

And DW Schultz is torpedoing this in the DNC, too? To what end? For what good? And does she not know that she is on the wrong side of history. AND MORALITY!

-90% Jimmy

There's that much more excitement when getting the treaty approved is viewed as a major achievement -- instead of a "done deal."
