Politico: Donald Trump knows the United States will never deport eleven million undocumented immigrants or do away with birthright citizenship. But what if we didwhat would be the political impact if Trump and other angry nativists in the GOP actually achieved most or all the changes they desire, cutting immigration back sharply? We already know, because something very similar happened once before in American history. Ninety years ago, two Republican presidentsWarren Harding and Calvin Coolidgeand a Congress dominated by Republicans enacted equally harsh policies against immigrants. Their success helped usher in the longest period of one-party rule in the 20th century. But it was the Democrats, not the GOP, who benefited, in one of the most whopping instances of unintentional consequences in American political history.

The massive defeat of Goldwater in 1964 left the same impression. Nixon won in 1968.

You can never be sure.
One of the disturbing things about Trump is precisely that he is legitimizing the "angry nativists of the GOP" by giving them a voice and leading in their polls. If he were polling at 2% like some other GOP angry nativists, they could be written off as a 'nut-job' minority. Instead they are the voice of the leading candidate for a major political party. I don't think we have heard the last from them even if a republican loses big time in 2016.
Ninety years ago, two Republican presidentsWarren Harding and Calvin Coolidgeand a Congress dominated by Republicans enacted equally harsh policies against immigrants.
Those two, plus Hoover, also enacted 'harsh policies' against trade. Fortunately, FDR and other Democrats reversed those policies when they understood that those had nothing to do with the health of the American working and middle class.
