Why the Media Loves Trump: CNN Charging 40 Times Its Normal Rate for GOP Debate Ads

CNN is set to cash in on the next Republican presidential debate on September 16 by charging a whopping “40 times its usual price” for commercial time, according to a report in Ad Age.

Normally priced at about $5,000 for a 30-second primetime spot, the network is charging as much as $200,000, which is on par with what some broadcast primetime series charge for commercial spots.

CNN is able to charge the higher rate thanks to viewer interest in billionaire businessman and GOP front-runner Donald Trump. It was the interest in Trump that helped Fox News set an all-time cable telecast record, excluding sports programming, with 24 million viewers during the first debate on August 6th. It gave the network its highest rated month in nearly three years.

The second tier debate that will take place earlier in the day will cost advertisers the still princely sum of $50,000 to $60,000 for a 30-second spot.

Does anyone really think they are going to give up a cash cow like Trump?

1. That sweet Super-PAC cash has to be spent somewhere! It's brilliant, actually.

First you put Trump on tv for free, as much as possible.

The other candidates are compelled to buy ad time to offset the disproportionate air time Trump gets.

Raise the ad rates 40% for those very ads.

Then laugh all the way to the bank.

Don't expect ANY television network to devote much time speaking out against Citizens United.

or do the CNN ads for the debate sound like those for monster truck rallies? Or maybe I'm thinking of the WWF? In any case, I remember thinking the voice was off -- it wasn't a somber "political sounding" voice, but something you'd hear on like Spike TV.

New Jersey threatened to start regulating it the way it does boxing. So they changed the name, essentially admitting that it's phony.

CNN is fully compromised and corrupted by the same lust for money and for power as the politicians they defend all the way to the bank.

Advertising their own debates as if it were going to be a mud-wrestling event is so sad as to be pathetic.

I'm old enough to remember before those two abominations came along, sure we only had a few stations yet they reported the news without much interest toward driving an agenda for the 1%ers. They killed the news channels with their greed for money, yet I guess they have to - they don't have primetime shows like the broadcast channels. Well, Lockup is a hit. Barf.

And MSNBC has decided to shoot itself in it's other foot! No wonder they are all Trumpeting...$$$ just for mentioning his name. Barf.

7. That's how TV works. Things that a lot of people watch generate more ad money and thus get played

more and talked about more.

This is a symptom of what we should be concerned about, not the root issue.

The root issue is, why are so many people so interested in this person as a potential President?

We should be concentrating on that issue and what we can do about it.
