The poor people, mentioned in the OP, are more likely to be Sunni than Shi'ia; Assad is from the Alawite sect of Shi'ia, which has more power than its numbers would suggest.
Whether refugees are more from any group than the national average, I don't know.

The number is roughly equivalent to the size of the Syrian population, but they are barely mentioned in the media.
