Conduct Of Coaches Questioned In Texas Referee Incident

ROUND ROCK, Texas (AP) -- The governing body for Texas high school sports questioned Wednesday whether the coaches of two football players accused of intentionally ramming a referee should have done more to calm emotions in a tense game.

The University Interscholastic League's executive committee heard from local officials on their investigation into the incident involving San Antonio Jay High School. The organization is investigating several allegations, including that the hit was prompted by something an assistant coach said and was preceded by racial slurs from the targeted umpire.

The incident was caught on video and sparked national attention and reaction.

Two Jay High School players, who have not been identified, and assistant coach Mack Breed have been suspended by the Northside Independent School District pending the investigation.

"This has been an embarrassment for the school the UIL and the state of Texas," said committee member James Colbert of Houston.

It is easy for a coach to tell his kids that ref has to pay and they go out and make him pay.

If they were involved, they should be banned from coaching everything including the chess team.

Charge the students with assault.

Investigate the coaches' involvement.

Police. Not school, school board, or league.

How difficult is this to understand?

Blame the victim.

If -- and that's a big IF -- the referee had used racist language (which I seriously doubt), there surely are other avenues to handle the team's grievances.

It is absolutely indefensible for the two students to attack the referee. Criminal charges need to be brought, and the ref has a good civil suit available.

Also did a late hit on the opposing quarterback on the last play of the game - a kneel down. I wonder what the quarterback said? (sarcasm)

The team is obviously out of control. I got to think serious consideration should be given to cancelling the rest of the season.

If I had been falsely accused on making racist statements, I would insist on charging the students as well as exploring a civil slander suit to possibly go along with the injury suit.
