... This year marks the 150th anniversary of the end of a war which took more American lives than all wars our nation has been engaged in from the Revolution to present conflicts. Popular Civil War reenactments continue to stroke the smoldering fire. Of all forms of warfare, civil war is the most brutal and devastating as “the enemy” is one’s own.”

The ancient Greek playwright Aeschylus, wrote, “In war, truth is the first casualty.” In the current flag controversy, truth continues to take a battering. Folklore is promoted as fact.

In the controversy of the contested Blood Stained Battle flag, emotion seeks to trump reason and fact. Private display of it is not enough for some. They demand it be unfurled on public, government property to satisfy their need. Advocates decry a rush to political correctness for its public removal. Yet, we all benefit from what is historically, not politically, correct ...

No other nation recognized the Confederacy. Historically, it was a counterfeit state. According to the US Department of State, Office of the Historian: “One of the most important victories won by the United States during the Civil War was not ever fought on a battlefield. Rather, it was a series of diplomatic victories that ensured that the Confederacy would fail to achieve diplomatic recognition by even a single foreign government.” To grant legitimacy to an illegitimate rump, political entity undermines the comity of nations ...
