Mormon Apocalypse Prediction Has People Stocking Up On Food

Sales for freeze-dried food, flashlights, blankets and tents have soared in Utah in recent weeks as some Mormons have begun to prepare for the end of the world. The so-called "preppers" believe the world is ending this month based on biblical prophecies, the Hebrew calendar, an unstable economy, world politics and astronomical occurrences, the Salt Lake Tribune reported Sunday.

“There is a sense of urgency, like something is up. A lot of people are mentioning things about September, like a financial collapse," said customer-service representative Ricardo Aranda at American Fork’s Thrive Life, which sells mostly freeze-dried food.

The Mormon apocalypse believers claim the Jewish High Holy Days that began this week will trigger a financial crisis based on the United States’ “wickedness.” They predict the full moon on Sept. 28 is the next sign of the world is ending.

Some of these speculations stem from Julie Rowe’s books, “A Greater Tomorrow: My Journey Beyond the Veil” and “The Time Is Now.” Rowe, a Mormon mother of three, published the books in 2014 to detail a “near-death experience." Her two books have sold more than 20,000 copies each.

Officials with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said they do not endorse the books or their teachings. The late Mormon apostle Boyd K. Packer said in a 2011 LDS General Conference that the “end” was not near and called on young Latter-day Saints to plan for long, productive lives.

It's part of their "self reliance" beliefs.

I knew a mormon family once, and they always had food on-hand for six months, 100 gallons of water, and all kind of self-reliance items, like seeds, water filters, gardening implements, etc. they weren't otherwise "preppers" that I know of.

Was telling me she was scared about this being the end of the world and all this stuff about the stock market and 'if you read the Book of Revelation it looks like all they said is coming true’. Poor kid. She’s really a lovely intelligent girl so I felt it my duty to tell her about the Book of Revelation and how its about as simple to interpret as Nostradamus’ quatrains and that she needn’t worry.

I also discovered that she believed the bible was actually written by someone called god.

In nursing school, you learn about several mistakes that can taken a patient out verrry quickly. On the flip side, that means you learn how to take yourself out very quickly if you decide to. And I'm on the downhill slope of my time already, I know it comes to us all, and I can see how there could or will come a point where it's more welcome than to be feared.

5. Two scenarios.

Either it ends in such a way as you're killed, in which case you don't need any extra food, or else it "ends" in such a way that you survive, in which case what, you've given yourself another few months of food? a year? Mormons are all supposed to be keeping at least 6 months of food on hand as it is, iirc. You'd think they'd stock up on seeds, fertilizer, and books on how to farm. Possibly hydroponically, and stocking up on water, windmills, and grow lights, if the outdoors is 'contaminated'.

the earth - survivalist books were written by Mormons.

There is one that I suspect my daughter still has that tells you exactly how much food etc. you will need for that 6-12 month stash. It is based very much on how our ancestors used to prepare for the winter months.

I think that the above book is one of the most informative ones I have ever bought. My family uses it to know how much to plant in our garden etc.

Personally I do not think the Bible tells any of us to prepare for the end other than our own death. Most traditional churches do not interpret Revelations the way the Mormons to.

I've got a Mormon cookbook, but not a 'prepper' type of book. But that reminds me - I've got most of the Foxfire series, and a new bookstore just opened a little bit away, and as I gave it a quick lookover the other day, it looked like they had the entire series on the shelves, so I might be able to fill in the gaps in my set.

have them. Many of us tried to go back to the earth but found that to live in today's world be needed more than what we could provide. My family gave it a try back then but failed for lack of money.

Today most of us have a job or social security and we are working on a family coop to provide what we can for ourselves. The books are still relevant. IF we have a place to garden.

to keep at least a years worth of food and supplies to keep their families. Most keep as much as they can to help others as well. The women get together and do dry canning periodically. This is so if tragedy strikes, any kind not end of the world silliness, they can rely on themselves and help others until the church gets to them. The church, from what I learned, has enough for millions of people. Food, clothing etc. This has been done for many many decades (not sure when it started but I would think almost from the beginning).

I was a member. Long story but I am no longer, I left when asked to promise all my belongings to the church upon my death. When I asked them what my family was supposed to do their answer was that they would take care of them. I quit the church knowing that I could never put my family in the position of having to rely on them, they are not Mormons and I would not want them to have to comply with the church for sustenance. That is probably a good way for the church to acquire so much.

EDIT to add: There were quite a few other reasons to quit, I had a list. They were not happy with my questions and I was not happy with their answers. They con you in at first, then you make friends (I had good friends in the church already) and then they ask for you to commit to things without telling you exactly what you are promising. Add to that the anti LGBT stance and I was outta there when I found out. I did get to know some fine, good people in that church however.

I hold no personal animosity towards the church. As a person whose family was not involved it presented some unique problems but then as I learned more there were my own personal problems. As I said, I know some very good and kind people who function in the church but do not feel the same way the church does at times. It must be hard for them.

But, there's no harm in having some food and other supplies on hand for emergencies. You never know when you'll be stuck without power due to natural disasters, bad winters, grid failures and the like.

The main reason some stockpile so much food is to hold them over until they can get gardens going. There's no way you can stock enough food to last for years or decades (unless you're a billionaire or something), but six months to a year's worth is doable for many, and I know I feel better when my pantry isn't empty. It's saved my family more than once when things got bad for us financially.

Can't remember if it is for 6 months or a year. But not a bad practice, if a job is lost etc.

Have a VERY wealthy Mormon friend who does this, constantly rotating as she uses the older and replaces with newer. Not necessary in her case, but she does it to follow the tradition.

But not for longer than a year's supply for the family, I believe.

People stock up, and buy really nice, expensive outdoor gear, and then, a little while after the end of the world, they figure out the world didn't end, and they sell their brand new expensive outdoor gear cheap in an "end of the world sale".

I believe this will be at least the 10th end of the world I've lived through. The last really good end of the world was in January 2000. I got a great $150 pair of Salomon hiking boots for $5 that March.
