(7,759 posts)the written commentary during and after his term in Office. Had we listened to his push (and even that of John Anderson the other candidate against Reagan) for environmental and climate change, think where we might be right now with none of the wars or conflicts since his term. We are masters of our own undoing.

(10,168 posts)I woke up thinking about him this morning too! I thought it was odd, actually.
I was thinking about his announcement about his cancer and how calm, kind and gentle he is. I also remember thinking about a special they did a few years back that showed the Carters at home. They like to eat dinner on trays in front of the T.V. together each night when they're home.
Just a couple of random thoughts about him as I was waking up.
What a coincidence!

(14,918 posts)The Carter Center was founded in 1982 by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, in partnership with Emory University, to advance peace and health worldwide. A nongovernmental organization, the Center has helped to improve life for people in more than 80 countries by resolving conflicts; advancing democracy, human rights, and economic opportunity; preventing diseases; improving mental health care; and teaching farmers to increase crop production.
Highlights
Leading a coalition that has reduced incidence of Guinea worm disease from an estimated 3.5 million cases in 1986 to 126 today, making it likely to be the first human disease since smallpox to be eradicated
Observing 100 elections in 38 countries to help establish and strengthen democracies
Furthering avenues to peace in Ethiopia, Eritrea, Liberia, Sudan, South Sudan, Uganda, the Korean Peninsula, Haiti, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the Middle East
Helping to establish a village-based health care delivery system in thousands of communities in Africa that now have trained health care personnel and volunteers to distribute drugs and provide health education
Strengthening international standards for human rights and the voices of individuals defending those rights in their communities worldwide
Pioneering new public health approaches to preventing or controlling devastating neglected diseases in Africa and Latin America
Advancing efforts to improve mental health care and diminish the stigma against people with mental illnesses.

(23,099 posts)Carter is such a good man, has lived an exemplary life and is a true example of what christians should be. He's one of the few politicians that actually cared about all the people in this country and tried his best to move us in the right direction. Best man to be president in this country - probably ever!!!

(5,106 posts)I'm so glad Pres. Jimmy has lived long enough to see his presidency vindicated (by the rational among us) and the real appreciation of the fine man he remained and the good he's done since out of office. There has never been a more worthy man to serve as president...and one who has represented the true Christian values the tea party types rave on about. Ironically, as an Annapolis grad and a nuclear (I believe) engineer he has more training in the military than any of the warmongers demanding attention today since Eisenhower (and, yes you, Sen McCain). Pres. Carter continues to suffer insults from clueless Republicans. I'm seventy this year, politically active locally ( as opposed to only local) politics; hope to hang on long enough to see some real sense rule and the Repugs forever devastated over their insane behavior these days.

For those of you on Facebook ( I understand the issues) there is a page you can join "Honoring Jimmy Carter".
It is pretty cool.
