[IMG][/IMG]
At Wednesdays second Republican debate, Carly Fiorina described a secretly recorded video from an anti-abortion group, part of a series that includes Planned Parenthood executives, as showing a fully formed fetus on the table, its heart beating, its legs kicking, while someone says, We have to keep it alive to harvest its brain. She challenged Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton and President Barack Obama to watch the tapes for themselves.
One problem: No such video exists.
What does exist is a video interview of a former employee of StemExpress, a tissue procurement agency like the fictitious group represented by the anti-abortion activists behind the video. In it, she claims she saw a fetus with a heartbeat, and says her supervisor planned to procure the fetuss brain for medical research. The video also includes unrelated stock footage of a fetus outside the womb that purports to be from an abortion, although the Center for Medical Progress, the group behind the videos, was also caught using, without attribution or permission, a photo from a womans stillbirth as if it showed an aborted fetus. No one in the videos has even alleged that a fetus was kept alive to harvest a brain, nor is there footage of it.
On Wednesday night, this was pointed out by numerous sources, including The Washington Posts fact checker, who wrote, No video has surfaced showing the scene Fiorina describes taking place inside a Planned Parenthood facility. Politifact rated the statement mostly false, and a Vox reporter, Sarah Kliff, who watched all twelve hours of the footage, wrote, What she says happens in the Planned Parenthood videos simply does not exist. Planned Parenthood sent out a memo, headlined simply, Carly Fiorina lied.
Fiorina has refused to back away from the claim. Rest assure, I have seen the images I talked about last night, she told ABC News. Rest assure, human lives are being harvested.

(15,806 posts)there's a woman in town who believes that Obama's healthcare reform is just a front for turning old folks into Soylent Green? She's been spouting this for six years at least, and is reliably present at every area event hosted by Americans for Prosperity. She's easy to spot, always carries a day-glo green poster hand-lettered with her warning. Creeeeeeepy.

(67,112 posts)them. I have a couple of friends, very well educated, but they find politics annoying. They vote, vote democratic, and do critical thinking ... but I've had to correct them a couple of times on something they have said/thought that were right from the right wing machine ... because they had just caught some information here and there.
I like DU, so read here a lot, but I bet I could be caught up into thinking some RW lies were true if not for DU. I think people are often very trusting, so think someone like her might be truthful, but HA, look at what she did to HP. Yep, another liar, she is!

This is the bottom line. The anti-choice movement is so convinced of their moral rectitude on this issue, that they blatantly lie through their teeth. "The planned parenthood videos" aren't about any of the litany of phony outrages being huffed about by the GOP. They're about one thing and one thing only- outlawing abortion in a country where most people are pro-choice.
This is what moral crusaders do, when they've lost their argument. They make up phony hyperbolic-sounding bullshit to mischaracterize the thing they're crusading against, to try to win the arguments they lose on the facts.
Every time.

(31 posts)We have to keep it alive to harvest its brain.
What is the reasoning behind this? Has anyone asked why this would be necessary? I am not an expert in this, but does this even make sense? If someone would "harvest" the brain wouldn't it die at that point? Beyond the video BS, does this make any sense whatsoever? If the fetus was dead would it make any difference?

In her impressive debate performance Wednesday night, former HP CEO Carly Fiorina deftly managed to back-foot the shameless Donald Trump for his jab at her looks, smoothly describe the geopolitics of the Middle East, and somehow link Iran and Planned Parenthood as two issues of character" for the nation that garnered one of the loudest applause lines of the night.
Fiorina dominated the debate with a fluency and confidence that many of her rivals, far more seasoned in politics, were not able to muster. She also skillfully managed to interject herself in many of the exchanges, racking up the third most speaking minutes of any candidate.

Oh, and no more reference to Planned Parenthood than in the first paragraph of above. And nothing about being a wee bit of a prevaricator.

(50,303 posts)I was thinking more about her statement and for a fetus to emerge in the condition she describes, it would have to be a late term abortion. Late term abortions are not done in PP offices, they're done in hospitals. And, as you all know, they aren't done unless absolutely medically necessary. It also does not make sense when she says the fetus had to be kept alive to harvest organs. Fetal tissue doesn't come from a live donor. I imagine whatever she saw - if she saw anything - was a staged re-enactment produced by an anti-abortion group and that it has no more basis in reality than the Area 51 alien autopsy.

(12,875 posts)Whether or not Fiorina actually believed what she said is difficult to discern, and almost besides the point.
I think her strategy was to make the most incendiary assertion about the PP contoversy to stoke outrage among the base, in order to be their champion for protecting innocent fetal liife. Fact-checking means nothing to the GOP base. What will stick with them when it comes time to vote is the strong emotional reaction of the imagery Fiorina put in their heads.
