(3,457 posts)I don't want to do the research myself but other braver people should be allowed to. I was not aware of the "brain damage" meme. As long as they are not presented as gospel what's the harm with knowing what they are doing. Posters here used to scan Free Republic and report back for our education and amusement. (Is that website even in existence anymore?)

(68,868 posts)Under the hearsay rule, you can't recite hearsay as proof of its contents--if Ted says "Martians live at the post office" in a bar you can't use that statement in court to prove that there are Martians living at the post office, but you could use it to show that Ted was drunk off his ass.
You can cite wingnut sources here to show "look how crazy those fuckers are." You shouldn't be able to cite them in order to agree with them.

(43 posts)for fear that I will be kicked off this forum. My party has gone crazy, so I came here in support of Hillary, but discovered Bernie. I am well on my way of changing my mind and supporting him, especially after the speech he gave at Liberty University, it brought tears to my eyes. In movie terms, he and his movement fuse Tom Joad from the Grapes of Wrath and Jefferson Smith from Mr Smith goes to Washington. He is exactly what this country needs now. I am tired of being a cynic and I want to believe in my country and its government. Bernie can do that.

(26,326 posts)Out of 30 hosts, probably only about 10 participate on a regular basis.
Some never participate.
If the hosts that are on don't check the alert que, stuff can sit for a while.
I saw the thread because I was on a jury for a reply (not the op)but didn't look in the alert que as I was just in and out of du.
It didn't even occur to me to look at GD vs. GDP when I was voting on the community standards alert.
This would have been an automatic lock based on GD vs GDP had hosts seen the alerts.
Voting on the content of the thread would have taken longer.

I greatly appreciate all the support Hosts get from the general DU populace, including those sweetly insulting pm's and posts and even hides after locking an OP for not meeting a forum's SOP.
All in all, it sometimes makes those who volunteer wonder why they do so.

(65,616 posts)of seeing people bash HRC on this site! Enough! Go post on stormfront already, lot of HRC haters there to be friends with. We should ALL be supportive of ALL our candidates since any one of them would make a great leader in the WH.

(12,665 posts)Please, everyone, consider giving Hosting a chance. DU always needs good host.
As with ANY Group or Team, things get stale, or predictable, or people get a bit hard-headed, or just plain tired of the same faces!! lol Teams and Groups always need fresh input, new eyes looking for things others have grown accustoming to seeing and not reacting to.
If you can judge IN GOOD FAITH whether a post should be left alone, or locked, due to the SOP of that Group? DU needs you!
Just click on "About this forum" and go from there.

(3,231 posts)I made the mistake of reading that garbage before having my coffee this morning and got my first hide ever. I'd do it again, too.
Primary season always gets ugly but this seems to be the absolute worst I've ever seen. I've been reading and posting on DU since 2002. Even though I don't post a lot, I read a lot.
I keep taking breaks due to things like the gay purge, hostility towards feminists and now the targeting of the AA group by the alert stalkers.
DU used to be my browser homepage and I used to be a paid member.
Not anymore. When we went to the jury system, I gave it a chance but then when it came time to renew my membership I declined.
When Bernie first announced I said I was voting for him in the primary and Hillary in the general because that's the way I saw things going. I like BOTH of them and it really, really, really bothers me to see all these attacks, some misogynistic, some conspiratorial and some downright hate filled screeds against Clinton. I respect the people who say she's too realpolitik for them - you gotta give to get is I think what rational centrists like Clinton and Obama believe.
I am a socialist and would love a socialist president but we live in the real world and the odds are low. But why help the right destroy the person who will most likely be out nominee and someone who needs to go on to win the general.

If there are any political science professionals observing this site, wouldn't it be fascinating to know what they're thinking? I've been wondering, and suddenly, for the first time in years, I'm remembering the seminal, enduring work of the brilliant longshoreman/political observer Eric Hoffer, The True Believer, Thoughts on the Nature of Mass Movements.
Could that be what is happening now? The parallel anger and rebellion on both the far right and far left? Practically everyone's angry and I've been assuming "people" were finally fed up, as I've been waiting for for years. But could this instead have the potential of a mass movement of what Hoffer called "true believers" from either (or both) the left and right? He felt they were far more like each other than like regular liberals and conservatives.
Some observations about the phenomenon.
* Elizabeth and Bernie have fired up a group of very passionate supporters, whose behavior
is not characteristic of either leader admired or of most strong liberals.
* Some behavior toward mainstream Democrats is so aggressive and hostile that
it often seems indistinguishable from that of equally fervent Tea Party/GOP base types
on mixed forums. Would some of them take a little hop across to get a new leader?
* Right-wing TP extremists prefer to lose elections to the Democrats than
compromise with other conservatives, even ones trying to effect many of the same goals.
* Is that what is happening with this subset of Bernie supporters? Would they choose
to hand the election to a GOP conservative rather than compromise with Democrats?
* If their chosen leader faded, would they fade from politics too, support another
Democrat, or find a new leader on the right?
* If this were the beginning of a mass movement, could Bernie and his other followers control and direct this particular group to achieve remarkable change? Or could it destroy our chances to take the White House, Senate, and many state offices in 2016? (Remembering that the TP destroyed its own power and potential and severely damaged the GOP, whose survival is still in question.)
There would be no society if living together depended upon understanding each other.
A movement is pioneered by men of words, materialized by fanatics and consolidated by men of action.
Mass movements can rise and spread without belief in a god, but never without belief in a devil. Usually, the strength of a mass movement is proportionate to the vividness and tangibility of its devil. (Hillary? Certainly no one on the right, yet. Would Big Money corruption finally become the primary devil once Hillary was vanquished, or would they chase someone who offended?)
"When hopes and dreams are loose in the streets, is well for the timid to lock doors, shutter windows, and lie low until the wrath has passed. For there is often a monstrous incongruity between the hopes, however noble and tender, and the action which follows them. It is as if ivied maidens and garlanded youths were to herald the four horsemen of the apocalypse."
Eric Hoffer, political philosopher
