WASHINGTON — Former Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said Thursday that he always thought the plan to train 5,000 moderate Syrians in a year was a tall order.

“This is what some of us were concerned about right from the beginning,” Hagel told The World-Herald. “Who wants to do this job to start with, so who can you recruit?”

Earlier this week, the military commander in charge of the fight against the Islamic State dropped a bombshell in his response to a question from Sen. Deb Fischer, R-Neb., a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee. Gen. Lloyd Austin said the number of U.S.-trained rebels who remain in the fight is “four or five.”

Hagel said he figured that the United States might be able to train hundreds of fighters, perhaps even 1,000.
