(13,869 posts)Dunning and Kruger have postulated that the effect is the result of internal illusion in the unskilled, and external misperception in the skilled: "The miscalibration of the incompetent stems from an error about the self, whereas the miscalibration of the highly competent stems from an error about others."[1]

(6,133 posts)When you are young and full of piss and vinegar, you might think you are faster and better than the old guy. I worked for this guy who cautioned me about this. His dad built houses and put him working with a seasoned man. He thought he knew everything and put himself in competition with the older guy. He ran around from here to there, back and forth, fast. The older guy was methodical and steady. At the end of the day the older guy got much more done. The father of my former boss asked him, "You learn anything?"
Now I am the boss and I find myself getting angry because of simple things I'd figure anyone should know are not known. Mess ups cost money.
The Dunning-Kruger effect happens all the time in the construction industry.
