Never thought I would see the day when so much outright insanity, deragment, lying, distortion et al would be the new normal in our political discourse. Politicians today are saying and doing so many absolutely crazy things that go unchallenged that reality and facts become meaningless.
The GOP debates exemplify a new surreal world. The Davis caper is another example of things running generally amuck. The MSM seems to encourage this new reality show by failing to challenge the mayhem. In fact the MSM is now engaging in some of the same activity as well. Fox Noise being the best example and now CNN and MSNBC arfe becoming imitators.
We cannot survive as a sand civil society unless things change where facts and the truth matters. Things are being said by politicians and the public that would have never seen the light of day in the post war era.
We are in for a rough ride in this next election where navigating the political landscape will be like going through a lanbrynth of mirrors that make the "twilight zone" and "Outer Limits" are real.

(45,319 posts)Here's Pat Buchanan giving the Republican Convention 1992 Key Note speech:
"The agenda that Clinton & Clinton would impose on America: abortion on demand, a litmus test for the Supreme Court, homosexual rights, discrimination against religious schools, women in combat units. That's change, all right. But that's not the kind of change America needs. It's not the kind of change America wants. And it's not the kind of change we can abide in a nation we still call "God's country."
I left out the parts about Hillary being a radical feminist and gay people being militant but you get the gist.
And what you call the Davis Caper was a bigot losing in the public square while gay couples got married in spite of her tantrums. That's good stuff. Gay couples got married. Did you miss that part?

(36,418 posts)and assume it's normal. America is as a rule not really sane but most are simply afraid to openly admit it.

No we're not.
Just vote for Bernie Sanders. And forget about the rest.

(28,821 posts)i feel like sharing your post with my son so he knows i'm not the only one bemoaning the current unbelievable state of affairs (we're working at the same place and he has to listen to me bitching daily over it). but what is a sand civil society? I've never heard of that and can't think what typo it would be...so maybe i just never heard of it?

(6,342 posts)With such a small debate schedule and a late state to the debates, the Democrats are basically giving the stage to the Republicans.
I've heard people ask, "Where are the Democrats?"
Plus Hillary rarely answers questions and even more rarely answers them directly. So the only person providing material to report on is Donald Trump.

(9,850 posts)Dean and pushed back after the GOP/media crucified him for the "Dean Scream." They realized that they could get away with damn near anything.
But I also think that that giving the GOP time for the clown circus to make its full showing is going to make so many voters sick to death of all their candidates.
